Oh no! Rotten teethies!

Hello everyone!
I'm very worried at the moment.
Dobby's breath has been absoloutely FOUL lately and I've checked him mouth and...... ROTTEN TEETH!!!
Rotten, wobbly teeth.
He's losing his baby teeth at the moment but surely they shouldn't also be rotten and smelly?
He even let me wobble one of his rotten teeth out earlier and it smelt so much.
I'm taking him to the vets next week to test him for dry eye... I'll mention this aswell.

Re: Oh no! Rotten teethies!

I've never come across this in any of my pups, usually their puppy teeth come out in an article of clothing or one of my other dogs ears and I find them. I've never come across any that look rotten. Check with your vet in case there's something else going on.

Re: Oh no! Rotten teethies!

My Chelsea has had teeth removed twice, and wish they had took them all out because they are bad again and now she is 17 I am too scared to have them done again.

I clean them often too but her breath is awful.

Last time she had them done, she had an infection in her jaw so really glad I didn't leave it, she was holding her mouth open alot bless her

Are they really badly full of plaque?

Loops x

Theyre not full of plaque... just some of them are like... black
and the ones that are black are all wiggly
I don't want his teethies to be a wiggly black mess

Re: Oh no! Rotten teethies!

That doesn't sound normal Does your vet open Saturday mornings? - if he were mine I'd rather him seen sooner rather than later, toothache is horrible as I'm sure you'll know!

Does he have a rope tuggy/raggy toy that you could soak in water and freeze, then give to him to chew to help soothe any discomfort this evening? Or you could even do the same with a tied teatowel/sock.

Is it just 1 or 2 black broken teeth, or several? Is he eating ok?

Either way, let us know what the vet says won't you. x

Re: Oh no! Rotten teethies!

Something to check out as soon as possible. Seems young for this sort of problem but getting it checked now may prevent ongoing damage to the permanent teeth. Sound be noted that dogs have a much higher pain tolerance than we do. What would cripple us in terms of toothache may be shown as only a lack of appetite in a dog.

If it is a problem with periodontal disease (which I am not convinced it is) it can cause problems with the liver, kidney and the immune system.

This is one of the reasons we feed raw. It's not for everyone and does need research. Couple of useful threads are stickied. The following pictures show two 6 year old dogs, the first fed dry food and treats, the second raw. It should be noted I think that most vets would not allow a dog's teeth to get to the stage shown in the first picture.

Another possible option which I have heard people say they have had a lot of success with is a product called PlaqueOff. There is an earlier thread specifically about this here

Re: Oh no! Rotten teethies!

poor Dobby, that doesn't sound normal to me. When Lily and Branston lost their baby teeth they fell out really cleanly (usually embedded in a toy or each other!!) but they were really white and strong looking as were their new teeth coming through. What do Dobby's new teeth look like? If they were looking unhealthy at his young age I think I would definitely get them checked out at the vets

Re: Oh no! Rotten teethies!

I've known of some puppy teeth to go black but its because they're dead as opposed to rotting the times I've known...I think Leah84's Jake had a puppy tooth go funny as it wasn't falling out but it was just a front canine I think.

I've no idea what could be causing rotting but if that isn't the case maybe see if the vet can check Dobby's anal glands? Milo Mum's lab gets stinky breath and the vet has put it down to anal glands, I don't agree but then I don't know what else it could be either. Rupert has never had bad breath for more than a day or two at a time no matter what he's been fed.

Hope he's OK x

Re: Oh no! Rotten teethies!

when jake was a puppy he had a tooth that chipped ever so slightly and it turned a sort of grey/blacky color and his breath was absolutely stinking. could it be something like that and he`s had a couple of little chips on a few teeth? jake`s stayed wobbly for absolutely ages to the point where it was hanging on a thread and the adult was pushing through behind it and we had to have it removed. these are the only pics i could find of his (his chip was quite large but even small ones can cause it). i`d defo have the vet check them to be safe

and the offending tooth after removal
