If it is a problem with periodontal disease (which I am not convinced it is) it can cause problems with the liver, kidney and the immune system.

This is one of the reasons we feed raw. It's not for everyone and does need research. Couple of useful threads are stickied. The following pictures show two 6 year old dogs, the first fed dry food and treats, the second raw. It should be noted I think that most vets would not allow a dog's teeth to get to the stage shown in the first picture.

Another possible option which I have heard people say they have had a lot of success with is a product called PlaqueOff. There is an earlier thread specifically about this here
Some of his teeth look like the 1st picture.... not the gums though.... just the tooth.
And these teeth are almost always hanging by a thread.

Lol talking about feeding raw... i tried giving him a raw chicken wing the other day and he sat there and barked at it for ten mins lol but didnt eat it. He was almost scared of it.

He hasnt lost his appetite atall, thankfully

Re: Oh no! Rotten teethies!

I have heard of black - 'dead' teeth just about hanging on - although havent seen the rottening, darkern tooth ourselves.. If your going to the vets then get them to check, might aswell if your there but I wouldnt worry to much to be honest - its fairly normal for the teeth to darken, and the breath to smell when losing teeth. Have you got a photo?

- also good luck with the dry eye test..
