is it common for dogs eyes to stay open after put down

Hi everyone i just wanted other people thoughts on this it could be a common thing,
But when a dog is put to sleep i was told there was 2 injections even though i think it could be just the one,

But i was under the inpression as the dog slowly goes to sleep then the hart slowly stops ect, natualy the dogs eyes will close? as he/She sleeps
But yet when my dog past away her eyes was wide open and couldnt close them?
I was a bit confused and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this
Many thanks

My dog only had one injection not two and yes his eyes stayed open too. He was looking into my son's eyes so I found it a bit of comfort that that was the last think he saw.

Some vets use two injections, others use just the one. Yes, the dose of barbiturates causes the heart to stop but it's absolutely normal for the eyes remain open, since the brain is no longer able to control the muscles that would ordinarily close them.
