Puppy heart rate?

Maybe I'm just worrying, but Purdy's heart rate seems to be really weird and irregular! Sometimes it'll be pounding really fast and hard when she's not doing anything but laying down enjoying some snuggles, and other times it will be fairly even and steady. There's even the odd time--like just now--When I'll put my hand there to check and it'll be pounding really fast, and I'll feel it even out in the space of a few seconds. Should I be worried?

Just timed her. Her heart is beating at 112 beats per minute.

Re: Puppy heart rate?

Not sure if i can be of any use but I spoke to my vet yesterday and he said my dogs heartbeat (Border Collie) should be about 60-120 Bpm Whether that should change for being a puppy I don't know :s I'm sure a guru with more know-how will be along shortly to answer you!

Re: Puppy heart rate?

Sounds ok, plus some dogs do have irregular heartbeats. I think some sighthounds have arrythmias but are still perfectly healthy. If you are worried then get the vet to listen next time you are there.
On my next visit Im getting Adam listened too!! He seems to get alot more worn out then my other 2 and Chihuahuas are prone to heart murmurs. (although it might just be that 1-2 hour walks are abit much for him!).

Re: Puppy heart rate?

Today I took her heart rate and it was beating at only 92 beats per minute. The reason I thought to check was because she was snuggled into me and I kept feeling her heart skip beats and she was jerking a lot, even though she was awake.

I think a trip to the vets is needed, if only to ease my worry.

Just timed her. Her heart is beating at 112 beats per minute.
Heart and Breathing rates at rest. Count how many breaths over a minute
12-30 is mormal, Heartbeat place your hand just behind the left elbow, or your finger in the groin pressing on the inside of his upper hind leg to find the femoral pulse. Normal heart rates may vary on sizze of the dog, anything from 60/100 for a large dog and 100/140 for a small dog could be normal. If you regularly check them you will know the parameters that are normal for your dog.

Another test for heart function is capillary refill time.
Lift the top lip and look at the gums, colour should be a mid pink. gently press on the gum with your index finger and release, colour should blach to pale and return to normal colour. In a normal dog this takes between 1 and 3 seconds. In a dog with circulatory problems such as heart this will take longer.

Dont know if this is any help??
