Spaying - When is the best time?

Our Daisy is booked in for spaying tomorrow and I feel worried sick. She is just 7 months old and is still so small. She is only just over 8 lbs.

I know it is the responsible thing to do but feel very worried. I have never felt like this with any of my other pets in the past. I suppose I am gettin neurotic in my old age

Are there any problems? I cannot remember what it was like when my last dog had it done as she had it done as the same time as another op.

Re: Spaying - When is the best time?

dont worry too much. most bitches recover from a spay really well and quickly.
most people recommend waiting until the bitch has had her first season, and then spay 3months after that. i had planned to do that with my own, but circumstances meant i eventually did it when she was about 8/9months old (with no season). she was substanstially bigger than yours, but she was absolutely fine. groggy when she came home, but back to her self the next day.

tehre are loads of threads about peoples experiences about spaying if you have a look around.

I'm sure Daisy will be fine but its understandable that you are worrying.

I agree that we seem to fret more as we get older. My youngster goes in on Monday for a minor op and I'm already getting myself worked up.

I've had all my bitches spayed over the last 30 yrs plus and there's never been a problem.

Re: Spaying - When is the best time?

All mine have been spayed, either came as spayed older rescues or I have had them spayed when old enough. I have always had it done 12 weeks after a season though, when things have returned to normal both physically and hormonally.

Re: Spaying - When is the best time?

I think the general consensus is 3 months after first season. However there are a lot of viewpoints. I think I remember this correctly but can't find sources so I could be wrong. The risk of Breast Cancer is virtually eliminated if spayed before the first season. Potential risk increases after each season up to about the third. As a counter doing it early before growth is complete (up to say 2 years) may lead to bone problems later on in life.

I know it doesn't help that much but thought I'd pass possible reasons for differing views.

Re: Spaying - When is the best time?

Well agianst my better judgement Caisy went in last Friday morning. I had got into such a silly state that my husband had to take her in by him+self. I was sure I was going to disgrace myself and let Daisy know that the vets was a bad place to be. Everything went fine and she came home that evening. She slept all evening and night and most of Saturday BUT, I cannot stop her from leaping all over the place and trying to get us to tug toys today. She's an absolute nightmare. Of course, I am happy that she is feeling good but am frightened she will hurt herself if she is allowed to play as she wishes - she keeps looking at us reproachfully when we wont play tug with her, lol.

Very interesting to hear about the cancer / bones theories. I have lost two dogs to breast cancer in my life, so I really hope that this one will not have these problems. I don't know about bone problems but Daisy is so lightweight I am hoping that she will not be troubled in later life.

It is such a relief that the worst is all over with and I know that I am the one who suffered, not Daisy who seems to be happy with it all. She got microchipped at the same time.

Re: Spaying - When is the best time?

Glad it all went well and she is on the mend now. As you say after the anaesthetic and drugs have worn off the main problem seems to be stopping them over do it.
