Advocate question.

Hi, I have been using Frontline spot on for my dog and 2 cats on the recommendation of my vet. I have sprayed my house with Staykill household flea spray from my vets, and have been treating my dog and cats every month with Frontline. I have never had a flea problem in all the years of keeping pets up until now that is! I was horrified to still see some fleas and flea feaces in my cats fur when I frontlined them again after only 4 weeks! I have heard about Advocate on here, and it sounds very good, but my vet says they don't stock it, but could order it for me! The thing is, I see it unfortunately doesn't treat for tapeworm. My cats at the moment have Profender spot on which does tape and roundworm, and my dog has Drontal tablets, but as advocate treats roundworms too, if I carried on treating my pets with Drontal and Profender as well as Advocate, would I be overdosing them???

Sorry if this is a bit confusing!

Re: Advocate question.

Can't comment on the main question as I know what is recommended for our dogs is not allowed for cats.

Here in Germany, Frontline is no longer recommended by vets as fleas have apparently built up an immunity to it. I don't know about cat friendly alternatives.

You may find frontline immunity? interesting.

Re: Advocate question.

Veterinary strength flea treatments and wormers, as any really, can and do in some instances have side effects. They can be pretty potent chemicals/insecticides a lot of which can interact and cause problems. Personally I would think it wise to use Advocate only on its own and not even overlap treatment with another similar one. If a separate wormer is used for tapeworm(most of which I think does other types too not just tapeworm) You would need to make sure it is safe to use with the chemicals in Advocate and wont interact.

Re: Advocate question.

Thanks for your help. Yes I'd read about fleas becoming immune to Frontline. I think I'll get my vet to get me some advocate for next month then. My cats are house cats with an outside run on decking, which they can get to via a cat flap through our wall. So it's not as if the cats are hunting to pick any fleas up! I hate fleas! Just want them gone!

Re: Advocate question.

We use advocate on Izzy, for tapeworm she gets a droncit tablet which apparently just treats tapeworm so no risk of overdosing
