I can see where you're getting at, but the way I see it, my dog isn't wild. She relies on me and needs me to try and do what's best for her anyway I can. To be honest I don't see chucking a raw rabbit to her four or five times a week as the best I could do.

Re: Raw feeding - I can't get my head around it!

Only got the book Work Wonders this morning and I've only just sat down today so not very far! Going to read through it before I do anything further, although I've had her on your little starter suggestion for the past day and a bit and so far she's loving it (Other than she's not too keen on the tripe and it was difficult to get a hold of). She's a bit more excited about meal times now, though

I'll let you know after I finish reading the book and when I've sorted out her meals (Although do expect me to come running to you crying if I mess it up! )

Re: Raw feeding - I can't get my head around it!

Same here. I've been a vegetarian nearly all my life and know nothing about meat. Never look at the supermarket meat aisles. Currently feeding pouches and frozen nugget type food from Pets at Home and the occasional bone from my local butcher and also looking to change. As I have a young Border Collie this thread is very interesting to me.

Now I just have to overcome my disgust at meat products, do my research into where it comes from (the raising/slaughter ethics are important to me) and buy some knives so I can prepare it. yuck

It is quite scary tbh. In the back of my mind is that these multi million dollar feed companies and vets should know more than me and should I really experiment on my own dog... sigh

I do know of a few vegetarian people who feed their dogs raw and full credit to them. The whole thing is scary. The question you have to ask.. who are these multi million dollar feed companies answerable to most.. their shareholders or the dogs who are fed inferior food bearing in mind that they can easily say we are in the acceptable ranges according to the XYZ legislation if they run into problems. Doesn't matter if X additive is known to be a mild carcenogenic if it's an allowable food supplement. Let's face it cigarettes are still manufactured and sold even though it's known they are dangerous. Money is the be all and end all here.

As to vets.. how much nutritional information are they taught relating specifically to dogs and who is it frequently sponsored by..

I'll repeat again what I frequently say.. raw feeding isn't the magic bullet which will slay all problems. It does need research and for you to be confident you are doing the right thing.

Re: Raw feeding - I can't get my head around it!

I've started the raw feeding with chicken quarters and of course she loves it. Unfortunately when she crunches chicken bones I can't stand it. I've been conditioned into chicken bone + dog = bad. So I'm letting her crunch some, then holding the chicken so can get at the rest of the meat, but not finish the bones.

I will gradually introduce other raw meat, bones and all, but top her up with her frozen nuggets which contain bone for now. Until I'm more confident I can't make myself give her chicken with the bones.

She may end up on a commercial raw diet with bones from the butcher fed separately, though she attacked her raw chicken with gusto, I think it's better for her and she obviously preferred it, I'm not sure I can cope.

awww, so cute.

Perhaps I should just get ear-plugs and get on with it. It's the sound I don't like, it just doesn't sound safe.
