Question Pig Bone?

We finished a knuckle of gammon today and gave Wesley the big bone to chow down on. Kept him entertained for about 2 hours during which time he was oblivious to anything else going on around him, he munched off all the meaty bits he could and kept chewing the bone. But I kept worrying if it was OK for him to do this?

Have I done bad? Or is this ok once every while?

Re: Pig Bone?

Cooked bones of any kind can be dangerous ,they become brittle and can splinter into very sharp pieces.
If you want to feed him the bone in future, strip the meat off before you cook it,raw bones are fine,as a raw feeder,i give mine chicken, pork, lamb and beef.
I would never feed the bones that are sold in pet shops either.

Re: Pig Bone?

I have to agree, feed raw bones only, and stay away from the deep fried variety from pet-shops.

My dogs have raw bones virtually every day, beef, chicken, lamb, pork and venison, all raw, frozen on a hot day and it keeps them busy for a while!

Re: Pig Bone?

Thanks a lot, I was keeping a very close eye on him. So raw bones, can I just get a joint of meat and cut out the bone for him? What raw meat can dogs eat? Im interested in this, however living in the Channel Islands may make getting the stuff a bit tricky

Well you could, but that's an expensive way of doing things! You're better off popping down to your butchers and asking for some bones for a dog, or picking up some chicken wings from the supermarket

Dogs can eat any raw meat - chicken, beef, lamb, game, fish, venison, turkey, pork, rabbit - you name it All raw bones are fine too - although take care to avoid the weight bearing ones (leg bones from heavy animals) as these are too hard and dense and can crack dogs teeth.
