Muscley dog

My chi cross used to be a bit over weight, so i put her on Arden Grange light to help her lose it in time for her to be spayed.
It worked, and then i kept her on it after her spay (and cut back the amount) but she starting putting a little bit of weight back on.
I was waiting to switch her to Acana once she had lost a bit but was told she would lose weight when she first goes on it so i decided to put her on it straight away.
Now shes been on in about 4 months maybe and has basically turned into a chunk of muscle, which on a small dog like her really does not look good. I was told that Acana does make them quite muscley but i wasn't expecting that.
Her normal weight is about 6-7lb and she was just over 7lb before she went on it but i have a feeling she weighs around 9lb now as she feels so heavy, but doesn't look overweight really.
Shes on the lowest end of the feeding guide line being 50g per day so i can't really cut it back much more, im wondering whether to just take her off it for a bit so it can turn back to fat and i can get it off her?

Re: Muscley dog

Is there anything wrong with her carrying muscle instead of fat surely it's more healthy?

Well no, there isn't, i don't want her to be fat but i wanted to get a bit off her and while its muscle its not possible. From the side view she looks perfect condition but from the top she looks like a sausage, it just doesn't look right

Re: Muscley dog

I'm chuckling away at your description of her as a sausage.

Hmmm, not an easy one, but possibly going back to the lighter food at least as a proportion of her diet might work? If you know she's ok with both of them I can't see it being a problem.

Edited to add, I'm a great believe in feeding by eye, the measurements are a guide, all dogs differ and can vary greatly with metabolisms, if you feel she could do better on a little less, see how she goes, she obviously isn't in any great danger of starving to death from the sausage description, lol!

Re: Muscley dog

I didn't know how else to describe it lol sausage seemed suitable. She did ok at loosing weight on AG light but it did make her coat awful and brought her dry skin back but i guess its ok if its only temporary, till shes lost some weight then she could go back on Acana. If i cut her back any more on the Acana shes going to start hunting for her own food lol

Maybe breakfast for AG and tea for Acana then? She doesn't know they're different kibbles, and if she's ok with eating both of them without major issues, perhaps that could work in the short term??

Re: Muscley dog

Yeh i might give that a go, its hard because my other chi is perfect weight but its hard for him to maintain it so i often give him dentastix (even though they are full of cr@p) because he loves them and they are full of cals lol but then i can't give them to Heidi so i feel mean
