Whats the best food for a Yorkie

She is 5 year old and weighed 14.8lbs when I was given her in June, she was being fed on Bakers and brawn, I knew I had to put a stop to that.

I went to Pets at home and they recommended Wainwright s diet dry food but she would not entertain it at all. So now she is on the Wainwright s wet diet food in a tray, she has a 3rd of a tray a day and is now 13.2lbs

Does this sound ok or please can anyone recommend anything else?

Many thanks in advance

Hi,firstly welcome, secondly you have took a step forward and asked about good food for your wee yorkie!
I can suggest a wet food rather than a dry food"these little dogs struggle to eat a dry"such tiny mouths!
PAH do a very good wet food Wainwright's Adult Tray Dog Food with Lamb and Rice 395gm 12 Pack | Pets at Home or http://www.petsathome.com/shop/gifts...atalogId=10601

Both very good and so much easier for your wee yorkie to eat and digest!

Yes that's what she is already on, just that a 3rd of a tray doesn't seem a lot and I feel Ella is still hungry. I have never owned a Yorkie before.

Ooops sorry,i misread your question,soz!

Glad your feeding a wet food, and 1/3rd a day seems a little measly!
The feeding guide is just"a guide"!
If your dog is looking healthy"with no ribs sticking out"then i would stick with this!
I would probably feed 3/4 to 1 a day,split between 2 meals,morning and evening!
Good luck, judge by eye on how your dog is looking.

The other problem is that she will only eat at around 11ish at night, which I find very strange. She wont even eat a biscuit before then?

Bless her. Did you say that you've been given her? Perhaps she is feeling rather unsettled at the moment due to the recent changes in her life. I would get her to the vets for a little check up just to be sure her lack of appetite isn't due to an underlying problem.

If all is well at the vets then I would suggest the following...

Feed your Yorkie twice a day - once in the morning, once in the evening. Put the food down for her and if she hasn't eaten it within 20 minutes, take it away and throw it. She will learn to eat when her food is down eventually and will not starve herself. 1/3 of a tray of Wainwrights is plenty. She is not hungry, just used to being fed more than she needs. Your new Yorkie is overweight by about 5 or 6lbs. Well done for getting her down to 13lbs, that's a really good start. Ideally, she needs to weigh about 7lbs.

Re: Whats the best food for a Yorkie

I feed my 25kg staffies 1 tray of WW wet and 100g of dry devided over two meals.

Wainwrights does have a low feeding guide compared to others, but it's just that, a guide, if you think she's hungry, add a little and see how it goes. Obviously you're looking to get a little weight off her and she's obviously used to being over fed, so that may account for her scavenging too. Well done for getting this far.

hi again... hope your little Yorkie's ok what's her name btw? Just wanted to mention, that 7lbs is probably a rough guideline for her weight. Just keep her on the WW low fat and see how she goes on that. Is she still eating only at 11pm or have you got her eating during the day?

Re: Whats the best food for a Yorkie

Hi her name is Ella, my 1st small dog ever and I love her so much. Yes she is only eating at night time, I am now wondering if the previous owner did this as she lived in a flat and could time her bowel movements?
