Ill and weak but while he's alive....

My golden retriever is very ill (see my post in Introductions -"new here and feeling sad") due to me giving him aspirin which provoked a heemmorage from the stomach. While he is still alive I would like to know if there's anything I can do to try to make him stronger - he is unable to walk and will drink but although he seems interested in food he gives up and starts to cough. Are there any foods which are particularly recommended for very ill dogs?

Re: Ill and weak but while he's alive....

Hi there - soooooo sorry to hear about your dog - l am lost for words as to what to say to make you feel better - I know the feeling and just can't think of anything to say that will help, except that I will be thinking of you and praying for you and your dog. There is a dog food called Science Plan and it comes in small tins - I had some last year from the vets and they recommend giving it to sick and recovering dogs. I was feeding it to my dog last year shortly before he passed and he did eat it - the vets say that it is so palatable that most dogs, however ill, will try to eat some. Hope this helps.

Re: Ill and weak but while he's alive....

Lucy - I would have thought that maybe your vet would have advised on food - When my Misty was so seriously ill I was told by my specialist (misty was referred) That the food I was giving her was the best I could without a certain prescription diet that cost £2 a can - She ate that food every single day - and even the day she passed away she ate her breakfast and kept it down. Misty had serious tummy probs due to AI and had had half her stomach removed. The food is Naturesdiet - BUT - buy a pack ask the vet please. I would not without a shadow of doubt even think of giving dry!
regards
sue

I cannot give advice on what food to feed.
I am posting as someone I knew did similiar to yourself. Her vet treated the dog with Vitamin K( reverses the affects of aspirin re blood clotting) Due to the Haemorrhage her dog's Pottasium and Sodium levels were low so supplements were given.
Her dog made a full recovery, but it did not happen overnight.
Is your vet treating your dog with anything

Re: Ill and weak but while he's alive....

He had him on an iv drip for 3 hours and gave him anti-sickness and diruretic pills as well as another injection which I did not remember. Since monday he has just had diruretics. He just wants to sleep all the time and is barely interested in anything going on around. I have very limited funds so am not sure how far I can go with this....his gums and inside his eyes were white monday and are now slightly pink but not much. i will take him to vets this afternoon and see if theres anything else he can do but it's not loooking good.
Thank you for your replies and helpful comments X
