what is it? is it dangerous?

Hi all, i just found this forum and seems like i could get some information about my dog. She is a mixed and not a high-profile one, her name is Jojo. She has been living with me about 4 years now and has already giving births three times accidentally. For your information, here in Indonesia, wild dogs and cats are living in the street freely and has no shelter if they're looks healthy, so, you could find them a few around your neighborhood. Maybe, it's not really common in other countries, but yes, it is what happen here.

Today, I was playing with her and surprised that she has a strange looking 'lump' on her vagina. I haven't take her to the vet because I has no idea if it is dangerous or not. My mom said that it has been 1-2 weeks, because Jojo has no signal of sickness, so she think that everything is okay, she even bath her and touch the 'lump' and Jojo was not showing any reaction. But I have a strange feeling about it, so I think it's better to ask about it here before i take her to the vet. Jojo is eating normally and shows nothing strange until now.

This is a picture showing the lump, if you had any info or experience to share it'll be very helpful. Thanks a lot guys!

Since my vocabs are not quite good, sorry if there's any strange words, I'm still learning english

Re: what is it? is it dangerous?

Looks very much like the start of a prolapse to me - BUT - I could be very wrong - so if it is at all possible i would get it checked out.
regards
sue

just taken another look and have editied to say - is it actually a lump or does it look as though it is coming from inside?
Always be on the safe side - take her to the vet!

I agree, it looks and sounds like a prolapse, which for anyone who doesn't know, is where the womb hangs down outside the body, and is in effect inside out.

At least, it will be very uncomfotable for her and she will need it put back in and stitched.

Why not get her spayed? It is likely this has happened as a result of her pregnancies and if there are already lots of stray dogs where you live, why add to them? 3 pregnancies is more than enough for any bitch, it woudl be cruel to let her get pregnant again.

Re: what is it? is it dangerous?

@doubletrouble : yes, it looks like coming from inside and puffed up. I will take her to the vet tomorrow for making sure

@jackson : yes, like i said, the births are all accidentally, we already keep her as safe as possible and still those stray dogs rushing into our house. And I would consider about spayed her. Thanks for the advices

Re: what is it? is it dangerous?

I am then now more convinced it is a prolaspe - BUT please do not be guided by a forum advise on this matter - pleased to see you are taking her to the vets - ask if they can spay at the same time - have just seen your dog in your intro and she looks a sweetie.
regards
sue

Re: what is it? is it dangerous?

hi, i just came back from the vet and she said that it's not a prolapse... it's a tumor the lump actually not coming out from inside, it's above the vagina.. and then she told me about the surgery and costs which will be cost more less $250! (incl. spay)

now i haven't decide yet, but i'll share what the vet did mentioned about the surgery:

#1 She prefer to get Jojo's blood tested in lab
#2 The surgery to cut the tumor
#3 The thread cost to stitch (tumor and spay)
#4 The drug while surgery
#5 The spay surgery
#6 The antibiotics

and those has not finish yet, if Jojo is weak after the surgery, then she must stay at the vet which will add the bills.

So before i decide any decisions, I have a few questions:

1) As you know, once your pet has a tumor, even it has taken away, there are chances for Jojo to has another tumor. How big the chances is depends on how bad the tumor is now and the vet has no idea about it until she had a surgery. My question is, is it possible to know how bad the tumor before the surgery?

2) Are the vet's actions which I mentioned above are proper? I mean, is there any other way to cure Jojo?

3) Are there anything I should do to prevent the disease spread to anyone or other pets? The vet suggest me to wash hands after touching Jojo and get her the diapers

Thanks for the infos and advices guys, appreciate it a lot

i'm so sorry to hear this, my friends dog had a mammory tumour removed & lived for 3 more years she was almost 16yrs when she died, so i think it would be wonderful if your lovely dog was given a chance. I think the vet is doing the correct thing for the tumour if its not removed it will probably spread & you dont have to worry you cant catch the disease & neither can other pets. Good luck with her.
