Whippet broken ankle

Hi all,

Looking for some advice really. Was up at the park tonight with my lab (18months) and my whippet (10 months) they were chasing fast as they always do.... Tinka out in front and Wispa behind.... Tinka was taking sharp corners when she gave a loud yelp and then started crying like I have never heard before. She held up her back right leg and continued crying for about 3-4 minutes. I had to carry her to the car wispa by our side and we took her straight to the vets. Her leg from the knee down looked swollen and deformed.

The Vet wants to refer her to an orthopedic surgeon as she has 2 fractures of the ankle and ligement damage although they want to do more x-rays tomorrow to confirm. He then went on to say we had 2 surgical options which I didnt really understand, yet he explained it a few times I think I was so shocked. One option is called a "service procedure" and surgically fuse the ankle but will mean movement is restricted although it will be usable and pain free. The second options he called a "flex foot" which would give normal movement but may not be as stable.

Does any of this make sense to anyone else?

Very upset at the moment so i am sorry for the long post

Thanks for reading

Trudie

Re: Whippet broken ankle

Hi

I have whippets too but have never had one with a broken leg so sorry can not help there.

The only, thing I can say is I do know of people whose whippets have had broken legs and have made good recoveries. At 10 months old Tinka is still young and I would imagine would make a good recovery.

If it was me i would either ring the orthopedic surgeon or your own vet and ask them to explain to you exactly what the options are and what they think is best for her.
