Diet and suppliments for arthritis - getting confused...

My dog has arthritis as a result of several joint problems. She is on metacam and i'm working on reducing her weight. She's on a low protein (17%) dog food to aid the weight loss (Wafcol senior, salmon + potato) and she has 2 suppliments which together provide Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM, Hyaluronic acid, Omega 3 and various vitamins.

Is the low protein diet Ok? I just read something about dogs with arthritis needing higher protein to maintain muscle mass.

Can you overdose on the suppliments? Different brands seem to prescribe vastly different amounts of each substance.

I've also read that Essential Fatty Acids may help reduce inflammation. Is this best given as cod liver oil or fish?

Should i just stop reading..?

Re: Diet and suppliments for arthritis - getting confused...

Hi,

The first thing that springs to my mind is a chat/email to Guy at Pooch at Mutt. Have a look on their website and at the various testimonials to get an idea Natural Dog Supplements | Pooch and Mutt.

I use their Bionic Biotics for my dog and it resolved tum issues where I felt all else was failing and saved numerous drugs and vets visits.

My old cat has recently had some joint issues and after my success with BB and the reports here of how good the Mobile Bones is, I asked Guy if that would be suitable for my cat. She has been on it a fortnight and the difference is immense.

I am sure he will be able to give some advice re your other queries as well. Got to be worth a try with their money back guarantee.

Have to add that I am not as experienced as lots here with arthritis and joint issues but can thoroughly recommend MBones and a chat with Guy.

Mobile Bones from Pooch and Mutt contains glucosamine and MSM, but without chondroitin, I'm not sure glucosamine works properly. They only use ethical ingredients and chondroitin is mostly sourced from battery hens or shark. My dysplasic pup is on it and is good, so far, but you need a good 6 weeks to see a difference.

Seraquin (non-prescription) contains glucosamine, chondroitin and turmeric, the latter of which is getting rave reviews for helping with arthritis.

The weight issue is crucial, keep working on that.

Nothing will really support the issue unless you are consistent. A good amount of exercise will help build muscle to keep the joint as healthy as possible.

You might want to discuss Trocoxil with the vet, a once monthly 'wonder' drug that has made my adult dog's arthritis symptoms disappear. I got a prescription from the vet and saved over £100 by ordering it online.
