Chicken Poo !!!

Hi,

We have 4 chickens which free range in our garden. My problem is my puppy seems to like eating chicken poo. We do stop her when we can but its so small its in among the grass and shrubs so when she finds it she devours it.

Just not sure if it will be a major problem for her. Dogs seem to like eating all sorts of rubbish, but just not sure if the chicken poo could make her very ill. There has been no problem so far.

Many thanks x

Re: Chicken Poo !!!

Hi.

I don't have that problem at the moment with my chickens as I don't have a dog yet (after Christmas though! ) however my friend also keeps chickens and her dogs are always eating the poo! They haven't been ill so I maybe wouldn't worry. I wonder why they are so attracted it to it though? Hers also eat fox poo!

I guess I will have all this to come eventually!

Re: Chicken Poo !!!

From a quick look around the internet, it seems it's not going to cause problems other than the possibility of worms -depends how much faith you have in the net I suppose.

A friend of mine kept chickens on her yard and the horses kept getting sick. She got rid of the chickens and the horses were fine altho the vet couldnt explain it.

That said - I'm sure farmers have kept chicken and collies for many years without monitoring how much chicken poop the collies devour

Re: Chicken Poo !!!

My guess would be that as long as the chickens are healthy and wormed etc it won't pose a problem but it might be worth posting your question on the poultry section of this forum to see what other chicken owners say. I am sure there will be others with a similar experience.

Re: Chicken Poo !!!

Thanks for your help.

I will post on the poultry section and see if anyone has anything different to say. So far she has been fine and Im sure she will grow out of it, my other dog doesn't bother with it.

Many thanks

xx
