megasofogus ????

I wondered if any of you had come across this problem.......
My Mums 12 week old GSD has been making strange sounds in the throat area for a couple of weeks. The best way I can describe it is.....imagine a washing machine full of water, with no clothes in it, as it goes on the wash cycle there a slopping noise, as the water moves from side to side....does that make sense? We have had him to the vets they checked him over but could find no problem. Tonight he is sat in front of us and we hear the noise again and his neck is inflating....like a bullfrog....... then it stops....weird.
She kindly wrote back and said her problem was megasofogus
This was pasted from a post justenuf made a while back

My Mums dog has exactly the same symptoms and he seems to be sick quite a lot
We asked the vet and he said they had checked for it.
Any idea’s what else it could be
it is worrying me.....
Any thoughts anyone ????? please.

Re: megasofogus ????

I had a whippet pup that we bred she had megaosphagus. It is when they have no valve on the top of their stomach. If your mum's dog had this she would be regurgitating her food after eating.

The only way of telling if he has it is for the vet to give him a baruim meal and to xray him. Dinky didn't have an aneasthetic for her xray as she was so tiny she was given a seditive and the vet held her. On the xray you could quite clearly see that her stomach and oesophagus were one and pear shaped wereas if is was normal it would have been a tube going into what wuld have most likely been oval shape. A dog that suufers from this also tends to be undersized. A friend has a greyhound who suffers from it and he is tiny not much bigger than a whippet. Our Dinky died at 8 weeks and was 7" tall.

If your vet says he has checked for it then I would get a second opinion as the only way of telling for sure is a barium meal and an xray. If there was any other way our vet would not have put a 6 week old whippet through it.

It is possible for a dog to survive with this teach him to eat with his bowl on the stairs so he has his front feet on the bottom step the second when he gets bigger and to stay like that for about 10 minutes after eating.
