dew claw in wrong place?

My puppy has dew claws on the inside of his front legs which is where I expect them to be but I found an extra one, on the inside of one of his hind legs, it's not really attached properley it just seems to be hanging there, is this "normal?"

Re: dew claw in wrong place?

Thats a double dew claw, perfectly normal in some breeds, like Beaucerons.

Re: dew claw in wrong place?

My Yorkie has dew claws on his back feet, they don't give him any trouble

If it is just hanging and loose it may be worth considering having it removed if you have him castrated.

Just read ya post again, lol! I see your dog has ONE on his rear leg, not two together, LOL!! Me reading too fast!!

Rear dew claws are rarer these days but not unusual.

Re: dew claw in wrong place?

Baillie has dew claws on both hind legs that just hang there. As she's a rescue, don't know why they weren't removed as a pup, but they don't cause any trouble.

Re: dew claw in wrong place?

Daisy whos 13 now, had huge great dew clews on both her back legs, they were pretty low down too, so I had them removed when she was spayed. They did heal quickly and there was nothing to be seen after.

Re: dew claw in wrong place?

oh okay sounds like it's more common than I thought, so I'm not going to worry about it but yes I'll probably ask them to snip it off when he's castrated later this year
