First time with chicken wings advice please?

I thought I would feed my two some chicken wings for their evening meal after hearing all the good points about them.

I gave Milly 2 and Monty 3. Milly is a Cav x poodle and she took a bit of time to eat hers but Monty who is a Cocker x poodle woofed all his down in two bites each!!

Do you think they maybe too small for him and he could do with a leg? or is he just being greedy or excited at something new?

Re: First time with chicken wings advice please?

How much does he weigh roughly? I would have thought they were fine. No need to go up to a quarter unless you really wanted to

Willow (goldie) has chicken wings and after me having to hold them at first she has learnt to chew them properly now

A leg quarter weighs about 300g and that's half of what my golden retriever should eat in a day so its got quite a lot on it. Drumsticks have the biggish knobbly bone on the end some prefer their dogs not to eat in case they swallow it whole too

My golden has had and will have wings but I will always hold them for him unless he gets much better. He would have eaten a whole leg quarter in one bite if I let him yesterday, size means nothing to him!

I'd just hold onto the end next time so he has to go slower.

Thanks.

I held the wings at first but they both seemed keen to get on with it. Milly took hers to her basket to eat and the second one she carried around the kitchen and garden and then went under swing seat to eat.

Monty just gobbled his down in seconds.

Milly is a fatty at around 10kg and Monty is around 11kg

Yes Monty is a greedy sod

Next time I will hold onto his to slow him down.

Just wanted to give them wings twice a week for eve meal as a treat and to get goodness and help with teeth. But no good if Monty isn't going to chew.

No you could try him with drumticks or a drumstick and a wing, hold both and see how he goes. Beware of the knobbly bone on the end of the drumstick though, our labrador will swallow it whole so I don't let him have it but do the golden as he crunches it at least once (usually ).

Ours started off on chicken wings and love them

Some are more naturally careful than others I guess.
Like GS said a leg quarter weighs a lot and would be an awful lot for Monty to have. His recommended raw DA would be 220 - 330g per day
Mind you thats coming from me who feeds things like this

In my defence I did take that off her part way through, chopped it up and divided it between the three of them the next day

Definitely do try holding them for longer
If Willow the eating machine can now carefully crunch through a wing I'm sure Monty will be able to do it too.

Re: First time with chicken wings advice please?

Thanks girls.

Will stick with the wings and hold on tightly eek:

Milly not so worried as she does what she always does with treats and wants to carry it around in her mouth all proud of herself like she's got prey that she caught herself.

I think because Monty is all cute looking with his curls and a wuss I forget sometimes how much of an avid chewer he is. He really does get through stuff quickly.

I don't want to overfeed either as Milly needs to lose a bit.
