lexie is getting raw dinner tonight for 1st time!!

decided to try lexie with raw to see how it goes with a view to maybe doing it a few days a week. perhaps tonights dinner will be frowned upon by dedicated raw feeders but here goes..... 4 natures menu chicken+veg nuggets, a chicken wing (combined weight 110g) and some kibble to bring it up as didnt want to just give her all raw-im prepared for her turning her nose up at it but she hasnt had anything today other than some treats out walking (homemade liver cake) so she should be hungry (but her being a picky madam doesnt mean she will eat it even if she is hungry )
it will be interesting to see her reaction when her dish goes down

You're not really supposed to feed raw with cooked (kibble) as they digest at different rates and that can cause tummy issues. So I'd leave the kibble out but otherwise sounds like a great meal

Re: lexie is getting raw dinner tonight for 1st time!!

Good for you giving it a try and I hope Lexie enjoys it.

I would just say that after weeks of research before putting Poppy onto raw, one thing that I read was not to feed commercial and raw at the same meal as they digest at different rates. Raw should digest in about 4-6 hours. Commercial takes about 12 hours. There should be no problems with any bacteria in raw food as it passes through the dog's digestive system relatively quickly. With commercial taking longer to digest then the raw can't pass through and there just may be a chance that there could be problems with any bacteria there might have been with the raw. That's my understanding, I bet someone else could explain it better .

The raw meal does look small in comparison to commercial. I bulk it up with blended veggies.

Re: lexie is getting raw dinner tonight for 1st time!!

opps, she has just ate it before i came back on PF didnt actually know that it was a big no no to feed 2 together, wouldnt have fed wet food with raw as i know not to mix cooked and raw meat but thought the kibble would be ok as i feel its blitzed to beyond recognition as meat product. lesson learned, thank you both for the advice, hopefully we wont have a problem from either end
well she ate the raw out and left about half the kibble.
every day is a school day!!!

Sounds like Lexie enjoyed the raw then looks like she's told you which she prefers .

How did she get on with the chicken wing? Did she crunch it up delicately or gulp it? Did you hold it for her? I'm still holding Poppy's after about 7 weeks.
