Tia UPDATE

some of you have read that i started tia (8 week old rottie) on a raw food diet a few days ago, and today i made a big mistake in given her chicken liver.

about an hour ago she had jet black diarrhea, and just a few mintues ago had some nearly clear liquid come out, she was what looked like straining to poo for a little while aswell

my partner said she was straining earlier to but thought it was due to new diet.must say she does seem ok in herself (chasing my lad, and running after the labrodor ect)

im worried now that i have caused her some trouble in given her the liver or could it be from the chicken bones she had eaten.

please any advice what to do

i have phoned the vet and they said wait till morning and see how she is and to keep given her fluid which i am, but m really really worried,

all this because i was stupid enough to misunderstand the raw diet instructions and now i think ive made my little girl ill

Re: help required

Oh dear, raw is great but it needs to be done carefully.

What was pup on when she came to you? you need to swap over slowly over a period of weeks as with any food.

How much liver was given? Too much gives eben my lot the squits, i think off hand it needs to be about 20% of the overall diet.

Be aware a lot of vets HATE the raw diet, they havent researched it so are scared of it so you will likely to get the old commercial food is better lecture.

make sure puppy is drinking so fluids are going in. I would leave then next meal now and go back to what puppy WAS on ans slowly feed raw over a period of weeks. And i suggest you read up on how to feed raw a bit more, dont worry we have all done it at one time but you do need to be careful as puppy needs to get the correct amount of meat/offal/bone.

she was on kibble as she is rescue
it was 102g over the course of the week it works out to be 10% of overall diet.

my vet was ok with the diet as he feeds his animals raw.

so i should give her the kibble she is used to in morning?

do you think she will be ok ? im going to stay with her all night incase she needs me

Re: help required

Yes, it sounds like too much liver.

Starting with raw is very exciting and unfortunately us humans have the urge to try out new meals a bit too quick for the dogs.

Go back to basics again and continue with one protein source for another 3-5 days or so, before adding in another another 3-5 days before adding a 3rd. I wouldn't give any offal for the first 3 weeks to a dog that hasn't been fed raw before... unfortunately it does tend to flie out the backend quicker than it goes in the front.

Obviously I am not a vet and maybe its worth trying to get hold of another vet if you are worried, but I suspect she would appear really poorly now if she had internal bleeding bad enough to be pooing blood.

I have seen liver poo, and it is normally really dark from all the iron found in liver.... but once again... I am not a vet.

does it look like blood? it could be a touch of colitis. Leave her till morning with plenty of watera nd you may want to let her out for a poo a bit more often tonight. If you think she needs veterinary care take her in as we cant see what is going on to advise.

Just go back to kibble and like Tanya said start slowly again.
Puppies have such sensitive tummies.

Re: help required

Get paper towel and dab on poo to check if it's blood or more likely, just runny poo. Calm and breathe! Puppies can look like they're very unwell then bounce up. If necessary, wake her to see how bright she appears.

Tomorrow, stick to chicken meat only, like breast meat, like Tanya said. Don't give her kibble now you've started raw. You risk making her sicker if you switch foods again. Stick to what she's had the last couple of days ie chicken. put some probiotic natural yoghurt on top to help digestion.

Don't give her anythng different this week! Introduce new stuff really gradually. Go to lexielou's diary! Stop panicking!

Re: help required

If she's drinking and keen on treats, I'd not panic. Stick purely to chicken for the next few days then introduce finger nail size pieces of anew meat, like turkey mince, good and bland. Up the amount over a week, then start another meat.

Be aware that pork is very rich and can cause upset tummies. Some dogs are intolerant. Just introduce new stuff super slowly. Be patient!

Eventually, she will probably be fine with everything. At her age, you need to be careful, go slowly, be patient.
