Re: drumsticks

Yes definately, probably the best way to start off with. May be hold on to it as well until you are sure he has got the idea.

Re: drumsticks

I dont give drumsticks to puppies, just chicken wings. I wouldnt hammer down a drumstick either, I would probably just give it to the pup to chew on, while under supervision

Re: drumsticks

My pups had drumsticks we let them strip the meat off them and then took the bones off them. Now they are a bit older they are alright chewing on the bones too.

The 2 italians also have drumsticks and thighs for their teas sometimes.

Re: drumsticks

I think it's fine, personally. I'm guessing your pup is not teeny now?

Sparkle will become famous soon enough
Re: drumsticks

I wouldn't hammer up either!! Never have done and my pups have always chomped through bones no problem 2lb 12 week old chis can get through pork ribs and most of the drumstick jut not the knobbly bit so I wouldn't worry hammering could cause choking! They are built to crunch through bones so just let nature do as intended

I dont think it's more a case of stopping them from gulping down hugechunks and not chewing properly the first time which can occasionally happen.
More of a precaution than anything and as you say, very often not necessary at all.

Mind you, I'm not an avid raw feeder and only dabble in the occasional bone so could have got it wrongD

Re: drumsticks

Personally I would prefer to hold it and let them chomp at it that way.

Our labrador gobbles and would swallow it whole if it was bashed up, this way he can only gobble when he's broken a bit off and by holding it carefully I try to make sure he can't bite too big a bit off.

He would swallow the knobbly bone on the end whole and is a daft thing, luckily my golden retriever is a bit more sedate and crunches the end at least once or twice before swallowing. My golden has had a fair few chicken wings and will have them daily when I move him onto raw but even so I think I might hold them for him for the forseeable...
