Advocate Flea Treatment

When I first got my puppy the vet provided me with Advocate flea treatment (6 months worth). It has now ran out, and so I have looked online as my vet is quite extortionate. Every website I have looked on says 'prescription only'. In this case I guess I would just ask my vet for the prescription and then buy online?

Or, is there any other flea treatment that covers a wide range of illness protection other than Advocate?
