Anal Glands

Just registered today, I am sure Anal Glands have already been discussed but asc a new memeber not sure how to search this subject for any posts. Anyway my dog has developed Anal Gland Problems, she seems to need them emptied about every month. Tried putting bran in her food but does not help. Anybody got any other ideas. Also want to learn how to empty them myself (internally not externally).Tried it the other week but could not feel th gland.

Re: Anal Glands

She is a lurcher, the vet did show me how to empty them by pressing on the outside but I could not do it that way, I would like to learn how to empty them internally. It only cost about £18 a time but times by twelve, £216 a year, which I could spend on pet ins instead

Re: Anal Glands

If you Google (video) expressing a dog's anal glands, there are lots of videos to show you how to do it.

Re: Anal Glands

if anal gland matter could be duplicated and put into bombs there would be no more need for nuclear weapons. its one of the worst smells on the planet along with fox poop. so good look in doing it yourself

a few bones per week should sort things out, thats raw bones not chews

Re: Anal Glands

Thanks for the advice, yes it is a distgusting smell, don't know why they call them "scent" glands!
Sue, you said you changed your dogs diet, what do you feed your dog. I have tried several different brands including James Werllbeloved (£40 a bag) but have her on Skinners Salmon and Rice which is vat free because it is for "working dogs"

Although she"s only a sheltie I give her Wafcol Salmon and Potato large breed so nice big bits about the size of 5p and a bit of raw meat mixed in,until I put her on this to be honest she could have done with having them emptied every 2 weeks,I just got the 3kg bag to start to see how it went as its quite expensive but not as much as the vet every few weeks

Re: Anal Glands

hi, lexie my 14mth old beagle has had AG prob since 6mths old, vet emptied them 1st 2 times then showed me how to do it (internally)-get the vet to show you exactly instead of learning off internet just to be on safe side, have a pair of disposable gloves, kitchen roll, lubricant/washing up liquid and someone to hold dog while you do the job. i have no problem doing it-used to calving/insemination cattle so im not funny about putting my hand in animals bums(well only need to use your finger not your whole hand in a dog!). vet recommended 1 weetabix/day as she was just fed on dry food then but now (with advice from being on here) i took her off the weetabix as it wasnt doing much and she was moved onto wet and dry (to increase her intake as she could do with a few extra pounds) and she is pooing perfectly and hard enough to empty glands, they still need emptied but not every 5weeks like we were doing. i tried her with raw chicken wings last week with a view to making that another thing to help her AG problem but she rejected her 2nd wing so we will persavere (sp?) with that and see if they help. she is currently on wainwrights wet and dry, used to be on JWB.

Re: Anal Glands

Thanks for your comments, I have a feeling that whatever I feed my dog she will always have the problem, I know some dogs seem to improve with a change of diet. I have had a look on the internet for a guide to emptying the anal glands but they all show you how to do it externally. This is the second dog I have had with this problem
