How Do I Get Charlie Down from 3 Meals a Day to 2?

Hi everybody

Charlie is just over 6 months now and I am thinking of reducing his 3 meals per day down to 2 but I am not sure how to do this without causing too much upset? Thank you.

I just stopped feeding lunch I did it a bit earlier than 6 months so Charlie should be fine.

You could give him a treat or kong or something in the middle of the day to ease the transition.

Yup I just cut it out for my lot and they didnt notice.
A kong is a good idea to occupy his mind when he might be thinking about lunch

I just took lunch away; Kilo does have a 'snack' now though (Sea Jerky Whopper) .

Edited to add, I did split the amount he ate for lunch between breakfast and dinner so he was still eating the same amount.

Take a meal away and add to the other meals slightly.

Didnt your breeder give you a feeding guide with all this sort of info on??

Re: How Do I Get Charlie Down from 3 Meals a Day to 2?

From our point of view it feels mean and upsetting to reduce our dogs meals from 3 to 2, then 2 to 1...but i've found my Charlie didn't care. By 8/9 months he was down to 1 meal a day and on adult food with no problem.

Of the 3 meals he seemed least interested in breakfast, so I skipped it and added the missing amount to his evening meal instead. Then I found him naturally leaving a bit of his lunch, so I cut that meal too and he's been fine about the changes.

If you think they're hungry then try giving them a carrot to munch on instead. Or if you think they're asking for food just because its 'time' - go for a quick walk instead to break up their idea of the routine.

With mine, I just cut out the mid day meal, and divided the amount in half and added the extra to the morning and evening meal. So they were getting the required amount still but in two meals not 3.

Just split it down to 2 meals, so take away the lunch. Don't go down to 1 meal though... Cavaliers have small bellies, and like their food.

Ours didnt seem at all bothered to cut food down to two meals, we just cut out lunch and fed the same daily total but split in half (rather than thirds).

I also will keep our two at two meals a day, they have breakfast and evening meal, balances out more evenly with highs and lows and energy use better we think.

Agreed, plus hopefully lessens the chance of bloat.
