Toothbrushing?

Just wondering if anyone does this, when to start and how often to do it? Is toothpaste also necessary?

Re: Toothbrushing?

Personally, I don't. I used to until someone brushed my teeth for me when I was unable to and in hospital. It was the most painful thing I've ever had done to my mouth, so on that principle, I wondered if I was hurting the dogs that much.
Raw meaty bones are the best things for keeping teeth clean. Failing that, Petzlife Gel seems to be helping a lot of dogs

Re: Toothbrushing?

The vet recommended I use plaqueoff for Jet. It's a granule that you sprinkle on the dogs food. I've not been using it that long but it seems to work.

Yes, Plaqueoff is another one (I'd forgot about that) Its not as expensive at petzlife, and is more of a supplement (I think its seaweed based, which contains a lot of iodine, so not suitable for dogs with thyroid problems) but is very good at preventing plaque (don't know about removing what is already there though).

Re: Toothbrushing?

Yes I have to brush two of my bitches teeth. They are closely related and both have awful teeth. I can't use bones as one of my bitches has a food allergy but the breeder of both these bitches feeds raw and her dogs also have poor teeth, so its obviously in the genes.

I clean my old bitch's teeth about 3/4 times a week and the youngster every day.
I've tried 'Plaque Off' plus just about everything else on the market and nothing has worked very well. At the moment I use Logic on the old bitch and Hatchwell tooth powder on the youngster.

Sparkle will become famous soon enough
Re: Toothbrushing?

We were talking about this on a chihuahua forum as chis are notorious for bad teeth and obv gum disease can cause heart problems and all sorts! Anyway the consensus was to brush and use a spray like petzlife and plenty of RMBs and chews!

I don't brush at all :-/ I think I will probably start at some point

Just for interest here is daisys teeth she is 18 months, raw fed, seen a toothbrush maybe 5 times when she was teething coz she smelt

She has a reverse scissor bite and slight overcrowding in the bottom theres no plaque between those teeth

I know her teeth are in amazing condition but I think anything to prevent dentals in the future is a bonus!'

Re: Toothbrushing?

Mia has beautiful pearly whites and I raw feed with plenty of meaty bones. I tried to clean her teeth with a brush and doggy toothpaste but she wasn't having any of it. Just as well that the bones do the trick.
