More food help ?

Hi. I posted a thread a week ago (ish) about switching from nature diet to jwb wet to mix in with my bostons dry food (fish4dogs). After 2 days he threw up a few times and his toilet trips were getting softer so I looked at the comments I got and did a bit of research and agree with everyone and stopped the switch but now he seems to still be upset tummy wise. In himself he is fine. Mental, naughty and brilliant but just throwing up occasionally and a little toilet trouble. I did mention in my last post that he guzzled his water down and wondered if that could make him up-chuck? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Re: More food help ?

How long since you stopped the JWB?

I'd probably give him just F4D for a while with no treats and see if that sorts him out. If it doesn't it might be worth a trip to the vets or maybe it's the F4D that isn't agreeing with him.

I think gulping down water too fast could make him throw up, but I wouldn't expect this to happen on a regular basis.

I'm assuming he's up to date with his worming?

Re: More food help ?

Yeah he's up to date. To be fair he does only throw up about once a day but I don't want to spur something on. Maybe I'll try just the dry food as you suggest. Perhaps his stomach is too sensitive for wet. I was going to give the f4d salmon mouse as I have a box of that but I don't know! Silly boy! His mum was fed on chicken and rice or noodles, they weren't but I wonder if that would be better?

Thanks for your help! Sometimes just having someone reply helps straighten it out in your head I think!

Re: More food help ?

I'm not an expert by any means.

I just thought by just feeding one food for a week or so you might be able to narrow down what it is that is upsetting him. A lot of puppy wet foods have chicken in them which dogs can be intolerant to.

The salmon mousse isn't a complete food so you don't want to give him that regularly in place of a meal. I give it as a meal about once a week.

Rice and noodles don't have much (or any) nutritional value for dogs so the only nutrition there is the chicken. I think giving him a proper dog food (or a well balanced raw diet) is going to be much more benefitial.

How old is he now? And how long have you had him?

Re: More food help ?

He's 12 weeks and we've had him 4. He has been on f4d for nearly 3 weeks. I mix the wet in with his dry as he doesn't eat it without at the moment only a tablespoon though. He won't eat it if I mix it with just water. We did the jwb for 3 days and back to nature diet mixing in for a few days so he doesn't get more unsettled.

Re: More food help ?

You mentioned the salmon mousse - you could mix that with his dry if you think the other wet is upsetting him, you just don't want to feed it on it's own.

Kenzie LOVEs the salmon mousse.

Re: More food help ?

My Boston brought stuff back up when he drink to fast aswell, i raised his water and food bowl off the floor and found that it has helped alot.
I've been told not to mix wet and dry food because they digest at different times and can cause tummy upset, but unsure if its true? im sure someone with more knowledge will correct me.
If you live close to a pets at home they do a free nutrition consultation they are very helpful and they will advise you on alot of things, you also recieve a free bag of food aswell. I took Boe and peanut the other day so two bags of food

Re: More food help ?

I think it's raw and cooked food that digest at different rates. Wet and dry together is fine

Re: More food help ?

You say it was after two days he starting having issues did you switch to the JWB straight away or do it slowly? Some dogs have issues when they're switched to a new food. It might be better to just feed one food or even just one type of meat for a few weeks see if he reacts to that, raw diet is excellent for this, and then introduce other types once you know he can handle that food.
