At last a food she likes.

We've had Anya for 4 weeks now and what a fussy eater she is. She came to us with a bag of Wagg which she hated. We added allsorts to it to tempt her, stews, mince, scrambled eggs, tuna, gravy...she ate everything except the wagg. Having researched it I can now see why. It's dreadful quality. She tried samples of Arden Grange, James Wellbeloved and Harringtons and turned her nose up at everything. Been quite worried about her as when we got her she only weighed less than 25 KG. I've looked online and it looks like at least 10 KG underweight.
After reading a few posts on here and watching her eating habits she deffo prefers wet food. We went to PAH and bought a couple of trays of Wainrights duck and rice along with some mixer. We gave her 1 tray with her mixer and she cleared the bowl. Thought maybe she was just very hungry and would have eaten anything lol. So today, full of anticipation I got her bowl out and opened a tray. She appeared next to me and started wagging her tail. Mixed in the mixer and put the bowl down she ate it with gusto so I gave her another half tray. I can't explain how happy I am that she is now eating something she clearly enjoys.
We weighed her at the vets after having her 2 weeks and she had only put on 300 grams, I'm hoping for a better result on Saturday to see how much she has put on this fortnight.

Re: At last a food she likes.

Don't be surprised of she does it again. Decided to not eat that is.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but you've taught her that if she doesn't eat what you put down, you'll add something, mince, egg etc. You need to teach her that she eats what you give her or goes without. I know it sounds harsh and will take a little will power but it's absolutely worth it in the long run.

Novak did the same when he was 6 months, and I catered to him, swapped food, added things etc. Until I took him the vets because I was worried. The vet said pick a food I knew he liked (Now you know she eats and enjoys the wainwrights/), and if he did it again, make his food, put it down and leave it for 15 minutes. If it's not gone, take it up and don't give him anything at all until next meal time, no treats, nothing at all, then do the same again. Basically he was pushing his luck and seeing what he could get away with.

He missed three meals, it was hard, with those puppy eyes and I felt terrible. But now he eats whatever food I put down happily. I feed him Wainwrights too.

Re: At last a food she likes.

Wainwrights is good - not sure what you are using as a mixer tho. The old fashioned type mixer biscuits arent terribly good. You could of course be meaning WW kibble

Main thing is she is liking her food and eating properly again.

Re: At last a food she likes.

Totaly see where you are coming from Lyceum. I have had dogs before that I have done the whole eat or go without thing and don't have a problem with that. Now I know she likes the Wainrights, that's it lol. That's what she gets from now on. I have never pandered to a dog before it's purely because she's so underweight.
I also think we have a good routine now which helps. She goes walkies at the same time every day and same with meals. Set times for everything and it all seems to be clicking into place now.
