Occasional limping

My one year old dog has been limping on and off for the past 2 months, he'll limp for a few days (what i think is his front right leg) he doesn't show any pain when running, walking or when its touched. It then seems to get better on it's own until a couple of weeks later when it'll happen again. Theres no signs of anything in his pad, he hasn't had any twists or falls, it seems random and i can't pin point where the problem is. He was born with 'odd' paws which we didn't know until he started growing, only his 3 pads touch the ground as the 4th hasn't grown down. This doesn't limit his running, jumping, but he seems to twist his ankles easily as it's off balance, however he always lets me know when he's twisted it as he won't put his paw down and cries alot, so i really don't think its that. Is it possible to get arthritis in a young dog? My previous dog would do the same type of thing when he got old but with his back legs.

Re: Occasional limping

We have this a lot with Buster, he's been checked and everything seems fine. He tends to limp after waking up or when he's been lying on it - possibly cramp. I'd get him off to the vet for a check-up just to make sure there is nothing serious

Re: Occasional limping

I'd go to your vet. It could possibly be OCD.

I did wonder if it was from him laying on it, he seems to get a bit better during the day until he has a rest in his bed, when he wakes it seems to be worse again. How long does buster limp for?

Re: Occasional limping

Thanks for the replies, i didn't want to run straight to the vets before asking as in the last 8 months he's been there around 10 times with different problems, which makes me feel like a hypercondriac. Do you think he'd be ok waiting for 2 weeks to see the vet as thats when he has his booster? If he was in obvious pain id take him straight there though.

No unfortunately it isn't just large breeds. My very small collie bitch was operated on at 8 months.

Re: Occasional limping

Katie you are not alone lol
I often wonder if the vets think I have got that munchhausen (sp) by proxy syndrome LOL
If you do wait a couple of weeks to see the vet , then i would rest the dog either no exercise or just lead walks round the block, because that would be the vets first thing he would say .
My Rottie bitch had ED or OCD in both elbows and that started of intermititantly (sp) again sorry lol
Some days she was fine and others lame as a duck.
How old is your dog , some dogs can get a condition called Pano its a condition that happens in young dogs.
Good luck and I hope its something very simple

Re: Occasional limping

Thanks for all your replies, i'll try keep him as quiet as possible and see if we can see the vet sooner.
Sorry twiggy, i was told the wrong info
Are there any other symptoms of OCD? Do the have any tender areas when touched?
the flintstones - i know what you mean! but it's only because we care and dont want to see them unwell, it would be so much easier if they could talk. My little guys 13 months now, time has flown by!
