puppy with both sex organs

We rescued Precious and Goldie. They are golden retriever and german shepard mix pups. Fun, lovable and overall healthy. But we found out Thursday from the vet that Precious has both male and female organs. We thought she had a hernia. The vet does not know what to do. Has anybody ever had this before? the vet says it's like one in 3 million. Any suggestions to help this darling.

Re: puppy with both sex organs

I would try another vet as though it is not common it does occur and there have been other posts on here with people with hermaphrodite dogs. Try googling hermaphrodite dog and you will come up with some information which will help to put your mind at rest that she is not a total freak.
I am sure there will be vets with more knowledge that know the best course of action. Basically she will have to be spayed/castrated and then, though not physically 'perfect' you will have the same dog as if she was single sex.

Re: puppy with both sex organs

I think most of us have extremely limited knowledge of this. My own is confined to hermaphrodites is confined to pigs who were slaughtered at a fairly young age.
All without fail lived perfectly normal lives. However I believe that in the dog it can cause a propensity toward having a higher incidence of Pyometra and some hormonal problems, though neither of these may happen.
I would have thought that any vet would need to know exactly what organs he may have to deal with in a future emergency by taking either x rays or scans.
