Second Season Due....But Its Our First!

Hi

Our Pippin is due her second season soon (had her first at 5 months in May, so due in November). However, we did not own Pippin then, and have never owned a dog/female dog so are unsure what to expect.

I have done some reading up on the topic, and she must have had her first season as her nipples are more pronounced than those of a puppy. However, she has always been clean, licking herself, so cannot see a change. She has been more hyper since Friday, but her food changed from can to pouch, so not sure if that is the reason.

Some people say a season is very messy with lots of blood, others say some dont bleed much.

I want to do whats best for Pippin and watch out for her starting, but not sure how too. Her vulva seems large to me, although it has done ever since we could see it better after her haircut!

Apparently she is not allowed at Dog Training for three weeks after she comes into season, does this sound right?

Does anyone have a good webpage to visit with advice? Not just on what visible changes there are going to be, but how long it goes on for and what we can do as good parents!

Thank you!

Re: Second Season Due....But Its Our First!

Hi,
Your bitches Vulva will be swollen she may or not loose some blood it depends on how clean she is,my bitch was awful, she never cleaned herself so we had spots of blood everywhere.

You need to keep her away from all entire males for around 4 to 5 weeks,I always say 5 weeks to be on the safe side,so keeping her away from training for 3 weeks is correct.Never leave her unattended even in your garden as dogs will clear fences to get at an inseason bitch, likewise she may decide to seek out a male.

I always used to give my bitch a good shower after her season to get rid of any lingering smells.
Hope this helps

They do lick themselves alot as very clean in nature. Some dogs vary as to how much blood lose there is. They can be a little off colour and more protective of the things they love. I suppose its probably no different to a ladys monthlys. But theres last alot longer. Bless her. I even saw period pants for dogs that loose alot of blood. What ever next. I suppose any things possible now a days.

Yep this is true - my puppy Zach is proof of it, his mum was jumped on by the neighbour's mongrel who cleared the fence...

Re: Second Season Due....But Its Our First!

I have 3 whippet bitches in season at the moment and you wouldn't know it. They keep themselves very clean. I do not take my bitches for walks whilst in season as we have a lot of people around here that do not put their dogs on leads I do have to watch them with my other bitches though as they can get quite grumpy.

On the other hand I have to constantly check my setter bitch as with her being long coated you cannot see as easily as the whippets and the boys are not at all interested in her. I do leave my castrated dog with the bitches whilst they are in season as they don't bother about him.

You can get season knickers for bitches in season although I never bother as my girls keep themslves clean
