Advice for a poorly basset hound pup please??

Our 4 month old basset hound pup is not himself at the moment and I would like some advice on what could be the problem and what we can do to help him get better quickly.

Last weekend we started giving him 3 meals a day instead of 4 and also on Sunday 24th we had weaned him onto his new puppy food which was highly recommended by a friend with a gorgeous basset, this is the food and it is aimed at sensitive stomachs anyway:

Wainwright's Complete Puppy Food with Salmon & Potato 2kg and 15kg | Pets at Home

He has not seemed himself since Monday gone, loss of energy, vomiting a couple of times, lots of diarrhea and he has actually left his food a few times (which is unbelievable as he loves eating), and this morning he is very lethargic, he has tried to be sick a couple of times and really is not himself and it is heartbreaking. He does actually have this deep growl when we pick him up by under his tummy, but he has always had this so I do not think it is part of the problem.

We have been reading that he may just have an upset tummy caused by the change in his food or by eating something he shouldn't have, would you all agree with this, or should we just whisk him straight off to the vets to get checked out?

If he was mine he'd be straight down the vets - 4 days is too long to leave a puppy with diarrhoea, vomitting and lethagy. I hope he's ok.

It is mainly today that he is really ill and doesn't seem himself, the symptoms have gotten worse over a few days, but I think you are probably right thanks!

I would definitely get him to the vets asap to get him checked over. As well as hopefully getting to the bottom of why he is like this, it will put your mind at rest

Thanks all, vets appointment at 5.30 today. A poorly basset with his droopy eyes is a very very heartbreaking sight.

Re: Advice for a poorly basset hound pup please??

Hope all goes well at the vets OP, in the mean time you need to ensure that he keeps up his fluid intake, and if he deteriotes call back the vet and ask for an emergency appointment or house call!

Please keep us informed
tinamary and bootcutboy like this.

Re: Advice for a poorly basset hound pup please??

Good choice - never just assume whats wrong with a dog when they're not themselves, not eating etc. Just get them to the vets. The best that can happen is you spend £20ish to be told theres nothing wrong.

good luck
