How to get my dog to gain weight

My 12 month old Boxer x Staffy (had him for about 2 weeks) is according to the vet a lil under weight she said its nothing to be worried about but would still like to see him gain a bit.

As he is very active im worried he will burn it off as quick as he puts it on, and not wanting to over feed him as he has the boxer breed in him i need to becareful he digests proparly before he excersizes.

Does anyone have any siggestions.

Thanks.

I wouldnt worry.
A slim dog is a much healthier dog than a fat one.

If your vet has said it's nothing to worry about, then I'd do exactly that - not worry A lean dog is much healthier than a fat one, and if you've only had your lad 2 weeks then I'm presuming he is a rescue so he'll probably gain a bit anyway once he has settled and is eating good quality food - what are you feeding him? He'll gain weight/fill out with maturity too.

Re: How to get my dog to gain weight

Yes I agree - don't worry - as long as he is healthy, he will begin to beef out as he matures. He is still quite young. If you are really worried about his weight you could give him some tripe - very nutritious and he should gain a little weight. Rather smelly but usually dogs love trip.

Good luck.

Assuming he is wormed and healthy would not worry too much1 but if he is looking distincly lean then tripe is good for adding weight!
REmember though - a young dog often looks lean! its when they get to five or six they can begin to spread if allowed1

jedited to add
ust noticed! 12 month!! he perhaps has not even started to fill out yet - wouldn't worry too much!

Re: How to get my dog to gain weight

thanks all.

I assumed he would gain some as he settles just wanted to make sure i am doing the best for him.

He is on Bakers complete dry mixed with half a can of pedagree chum meat.

He is totally healthy and upto date on all vaccines, worming, fleas, lung worm etc.
so i will stop worrying now.x

Re: How to get my dog to gain weight

Bakers is probably the worst dog food there is I'm afraid and Pedigree isn't too far behind. Both brands are full of cereals, junk, fillers, e numbers, sugar, artifical additives and very little meat.

This could be why he is a little too lean - he won't be getting good quality nutrition from his food. Would you consider changing it? Skinners field & trial is a good budget option - James Wellbeloved, Burns, Arden Grange, Barking Heads, Fish4Dogs, Simpsons, Wainwrights and Orijen are all very good quality foods too. They needn't work out much more expensive than your current food because you don't actually need to feed as much of them.

Re: How to get my dog to gain weight

I agree with the above 100%. To be blunt, ditch the bakers and pedigree ASAP, they are awful foods.

If you're by a pets at home, their wainwrights is £8 for 12 trays, and the feeding guide is small (I give my 25kg staffy a tray a day and 200g of dry over two meals). They also do wainwrights dry.

The wet is 70% meat, as opposed to pedigree which is 4% meat derivatives.

Other great dry foods are Skinners (the salmon and rice or the duck and rice), Arden Grange, Simpsons, Orijen, Arcana, Taste of the wild. To name a few. You can get all of those online.

Other great wet foods are nature diet, natures menu, natures harvest, naturediet. All of those are available from pets at home.

I have two staffy x's, one is lean, looks skinny sometimes but the vet says he's fine. The other is chunky. So if the vet says not to worry, I'd not worry.
