looking for advice on 18 year old mongrel showing serious stress and fear
Hi there, I own an 18 year old mongrel named Becky.
She joined us when she was around 3/4, and lived in a family home with two young children, a cocker spaniel and a boxer (both male and very rowdy) for around eight years, and then moved to live with my grandmother in a quiet enviroment.
A year ago she came back to live with us, in a small flat, with 3 residents, and the flat is alot busier with more activity going on.
She began having panic attacks, (even thought she has always been nervous around loud noises, fireworks ect) and will not leave a specific bedroom unless it is to go outside for toilet/walk.
There is also a lhasa appso who is around 4 years old, and very spoilt in nature, and rowdy when people come in, the postman arrives ect. But he does not bother much with Becky, they dont fight or play.
She constantly hyperventilates and hides under the bed, she does not bark she just whimpers. When she is outside she is great, ears up and will play happily.
The vet put her on valium to help her at night but we have managed to get her off them to try some other options.
For an 18 year old she is in great health, and great physical condition, but I am really worried that she is living in one room and will not brave the rest of the house, and I know she is healthy enough to live longer, so really want to try and help her.
Any advice, or help would be much appreciated, thank you.
