Swollen glands

I have tonight discovered my Sid glands in his throat are swollen, one side more than the other. I am going to take him to the vet tomorrow but after searching the net for information I am scaring myself. On site said to check his back legs and after doing so I have found he has a lump at the back too on one of the legs. Does anyone have any knowledge on this, he did get hayfever once in the summer could it this be an infection from an allergy or would that only affect his throat glands?

I am really hoping it is only an infection but am worried it could be cancer, he is only 5.

Re: Swollen glands

Firstly, don't panic, there's a number of things it could be, it could be something as simple as an infection-think how one side of your glands enlarge when you get an infection!. Is your insurance up to date? might be worth checking? Halifax seem to offer a very comprehensive insurance for £12 a month. Honestly don't worry, It;s natural to assume the worst, it isn't always the case, I promise!!!
5 is still very young, they are more resiliant than you think!!!
(this is coming from someone who has beat cancer fr the last 6 years!!)
Good luck, let us know how you get on!!

Re: Swollen glands

Thanks for reply. Have vets this afternoon. I am really hoping it is only an infection. Have got pet insurance but it is not the sort that will continue to cover a condition for a long period of time. Sid is really my baby and he makes me feel safe as he is soo big, whereas my border terriers don't yet have the same affect when we are out! (much more vocal in the house though).

Re: Swollen glands

Been to vets. Don't know one way or the other yet. Says he hasn't got a temperature and both glands on his hind legs are up as well as his throat so its a bit worrying. He drew some fluid out of the glands and gave him antibiotics (just in case it is an infection). Now we have to wait for the results on Thursday and hope they don't show anything.

Re: Swollen glands

Normally when the glands are up this is due to some health problem - don't worry it could be very mnor - the glands nearest the problem are the ones normally affected - you have done right by seeking veternary treatment as none of us are qualified to say what could or could not be wrong - but please try not to worry too much.

Re: Swollen glands

I am afraid the news is not good. I haven't been able to write this for the last couple of days because I have been too upset.

The vet rang me Wednesday with the results that he is 99.9% sure it is lymphoma. He went in yesterday to have further tests to see how progressive it is, so I won't know exactly how long he has until Monday.

They did tell me it is incurable but can be treated with intense chemo (exact details unknown until results in). She said though that still the longest she has known a dog to survive with chemo is a year.

I just still can't believe it, he is only 5.

What terrible news for you especially in a dog so young.
