Moving from Puppy Food

Hi guys,

We have a Boxer cross Terrier who is now 11 months old and has just been castrated.

When we were at the vets we asked about his diet and they said we can probably move him off of puppy food now, he is at 27KG now and has near enough stopped growing.

At present he is fed Bakers Puppy food (Beef and Country Veg) but it has always caused quite a stink from the backside (farts and poo) and usually comes out a bit too runny. We always suspected that the food was a bit too rich for him but we did not want to change his diet incase it upset things further.

So now we need to look ahead, what do you all suggest? I have seen the raw feeding ideas around, how much does this cost in practice and how easy are all of the items to procure?

On the flip side what in the way of commercial food is suggested?

Looking forward to ideas and suggestions

Cheers

Re: Moving from Puppy Food

if you fancy going down the raw route, read up and get plenty of advice BEFORE you start, lol!!

Cost-wise, for comparision, I feed my 5 adult rotties on raw and it costs me around £15 per dog per month and I get it delivered to my front door.

Re: Moving from Puppy Food

Hi and welcome
Good to hear you are looking to move your lovely boy away from Bakers. It's really not a good food and more like eating a macdonalds every day than a healthy meal.
If you are into raw, which I feel is probably best then have a look at the "sticky" at the top of this page that katiefrank has put together.
Altho I am all for raw, it's not something I could do.
My preference is for a good quality wet food as it's easier on the digestion than kibble and my dog is v sensitive.
Wet recommendation would be Naturediet, NaturesHarvest, Natures Menu, Forthglade (black sleeves) PetsatHome Wainwrights (that what I feed)
Good kibbles to look at are Orijen, Acana, Fish4Dogs, Barking Heads, Arden Grange,Skinners, CSJ and there are probably more. It really depends on your budget but the highest meat content with the fewest cereal you can afford - may be go down the hypoallergenic route.

Lots feed a mix of kibble and wet either one meal of each or mixed.

As you can see, it's a bit of a minefield but when you have narrowed it down,
perhaps get a couple of samples to see which your dog prefers.

Good luck with your search

Re: Moving from Puppy Food

would agree with the vet its time for adult food and anything but Bakers - equivalent of feeding a child McDonalds everyday. A dog doesn't care about a pea shaped piece of kibble being green - its there for the owners LOL

Loads of good foods on the market. I have 3 BCs and they are all on Wainwrights wet food and look fantastic on it - it costs me just over £40 a month to feed them all. The ingredients are good so we are sticking with that.

If I went back to dried kibble would probably be Acana or Orijen but some dogs do find it a bit rich, second choice would then be Arden Grange or something similar.

Raw I think is always best, mine have a raw meal at least once a week but as they compete and we travel around the country during the summer its make raw feeding a little impractical for me.

Its not too rich for him, its full of crap. I hate Bakers, Roo came to us on this and as soon as I joined here I ditched it!

I feed mine now on Skinners Puppy and Wainwrights Wet, but once my WW is up I'm moving to Arden Grange I think, simply because I want to see if they like it. If not, back to Wainwrights.

Wainwrights is from pets at home and is as decent a wet food for the budget as you will get.

Re: Moving from Puppy Food

Hi Guys

Just got back to this thread, it has been a nutty week!

Would we see a marked improvement in wet food or is it just a recommendation?!

Wainwrights seems like a good idea, their dry dog food seems like a good bet and a good price?

Would the dry food from Wainwrights be OK? It looks good to me, and is in our price bracket

thanks

Re: Moving from Puppy Food

Wainwrights is a v good middle of the road food. Their wet is certainly very popular and one of the better quality at a decent price.
They do a new advance dry and the sensitive (salmon) is probably better than WW salmon (if you were considering that one) Apart from the sensitive, WW dry is the better option.

Hope this helps

Re: Moving from Puppy Food

You could also try CSJ, really good value theres a huge range to suit everyone and prices range from £11 a bag to £35 depending on what you go for. My dog has a lovely soft coat, good teeth and doesn't fart(often) and his poo is realy healthy looking! I get the hi-lost it's £11 a bag for me at first i thought theres no way you can get a decent food for £11 but....you can

Re: Moving from Puppy Food

My lot are raw fed. I've added in Wainwrights wet today because the puppies appear too skinny (probably because I don't vary the raw food enough). If you're in the Essex/herts area, the DogFood Company is fantastic for raw supplies. There are lots out there-see the sticky above.

I'd say that Wainwrights is the best for the money. Please get shot of the Bakers-you'll see a huge difference in your puppy.
