Re: Weight control for my retriever

Think you are doing all the right things but if worried why not see your vet for advice and see if she is actually overweight?

We all put a bit of weight when we get old hun seems like she's healthy and happy with her walks.

The longer she is on her new diet you may also see more results.

Ditto what Cockerpoo has said.
It sounds like you are on the right track

As for 5miles a day then thats a bit extreme for a 10yr old golden in my view. 2 miles is quite enough.

Re: Weight control for my retriever

SOunds like you are doing good with your Goldie OP.

She is losing weight and that is good -you dont want her to lose it quickly as that could be worse.

How about posting some pics and we can see what we think?

Re: Weight control for my retriever

Thanks for all the helpful replies. She did used to get longer walks, but she's become more lethargic with age and can't really be bothered with chasing frisbees or swimming in the river these days.

She finds it more challenging to get into the car boot nowadays too - either that or she's grown more intelligent and has realised if she doesn't waste any energy in trying I'll pick her up anyway!

Will stick with the Arden Grange and see how it goes. Thanks again.

Is it just her weight and age do you think or could she have arthritis?

Re: Weight control for my retriever

Sounds as tho you are on the right track. As mentioned gradual weightloss is best and if she is definately losing, then she will most probably continue until she reaches what you feel is an ideal weight.
I wouldnt look to change food if she is happy on it, good output and losing weight, then AG sounds ideal. Maybe cut back a bit if you feel and add a few veg as mentioned.
Love to see some pics of your girlie

Re: Weight control for my retriever

Don't worry, it sounds like you are on the right track and I agree 5 miles is a bit extreme for an old girl and golden retreivers do slow right down when they get older. I'd make sure the food you're on is a Senior or Light variety as they have less calories in to cater for the reduced amount of exercise they are doing. The good ones also have extra supplements in such as glucosamine which really helps with their joints as they get older especially good for retreivers. xx
