Chance isn't well >>>

Hi everyone, This is Chances Dad.

She has told me all about this place so I thought I'd ask for some advice.

About 12:00 she went into her kennel run as normal and seemed fine. She goes in most days and very rarely 'messes' out there. She always waits and goes on the lawn.

I got home at about 4:30 pm and it was like a scene from a horror movie. She had a SEVERE bout of diareeh. The floor was covered with four or five 'streaks' of what I can only describe as muddy water. (Like concrete that you may see being poured into foundations!)

She then ran onto the lawn and effectively wee'd through her bum. Sorry for being so grafic but I wanted to get across how loose she is. She then went twice more and was a little subdued.

I've not fed her and she has had a couple of mad moments of bounding about but now she is fast asleep on her bed. Something she would never normally do at this time.

Apart from allowing access to plenty of water and give 'nil food by mouth' should I be doing anything?

I wouldn't do anything else, give her stomach time to settle by itself and re-introduce food in the morning. If she's being her normal self when shes awake I wouldn't worry to much but if she's overly lathargic get her to the vets.

Re: Chance isn't well >>>

Hi hope Chance gets better soon. As said in one of the above posts, best to feed nothing for 12 - 24 hrs then re introduce light food for example scrambled egg, chicken / rice.
One of my dogs had a bad stomache like this but 24hrs later was a lot better.
If the runs turns to blood then could be a bad ienteritus infection and i would take Chance to the vets.
Good luck and keep us informed x

Re: Chance isn't well >>>

We had similar when our boy was a pup and below was what our vet told us what to do and he was right as rain in no time.

First 24 hours NO FOOD
Day 2 3 small meals of boiled chicken and rice ONLY
Day 3 3 small meals of boiled chicken and rice ONLY
Day 4 3 small meals of boiled chicken and rice ONLY
Day 5 3 larger meals of boiled chicken and rice ONLY
Day 6 3 larger meals of boiled chicken and rice ONLY
Day 7 3 larger meals of boiled chicken and rice ONLY
Day 8 Boiled chicken and rice & start introducing normal food gradually

NO TREATS WHILST ON THIS FEEDING REGIME

If any other signs of illness (e.g lethargic) take to vets straight away
If still being sick/dihorria but still seems his usual self take to the vets on day 2

Re: Chance isn't well >>>

me too Alan,
would just introduce the normal feed but maybe a smaller amount and see what happens. Just make sure there is plenty of water being taken and that maybe getting some live natural yogurt (just a couple of tablespoons) added to meal will help restore any lost gut flora!

Re: Chance isn't well >>>

Well, thanks everyone for the advice.

She's just been again this morning and still isn't very solid (although not quite the water we saw yesterday).

Keeping her off the food for now and see how she is this afternoon.

Thanks again. - Oh, and Chance says HI!
