Deanna

I'm so sorry to hear the news about Timber. This is just an awful disease affecting such young dogs. My thoughts are with you - I fully understand the non-stop crying I seem to be much the same in the last week. Take care.

To others on the thread, thank you for your kind wishes. We got our boy home last night. All his blood levels are very high except the red blood cells which are extremely low. We have at least 5 different drugs to administer at various times of the day. He is quite bright and has been playing with our other dog but tires v. quickly. Fingers crossed for a little time together.

Unhappy Re: Juvenile renal disease, please help

Hi,
I have joined this forum as a search on Juvenile Kidney disease brought up this thread. We have a wonderful Cavalier King Charles Spaniel called Pippin who was diagnosed with this dreadful condition at the beginning of the year. We were told then that he had about 6 months left. He is 3 1/2 years old now and has deteriorated badly over the last couple of days.. I am going to have to take him to the vet tomorrow and I am pretty certain they will say there is nothing left to do. Suffice to say I am dreading it!!!
When we first had Pippin as a tiny puppy he showed all the symptoms of this although sadly I was ignorant to it myself. He drank copious amounts of water and was very hard to toilet train, almost a year before being reliably dry. His pee was very light in colour; almost water like. I was worried about this and took him to a vet but they said he didn’t have a urine infection and told me that some puppies do this instead of eating so to pick up his water bowl after he had drunk from it and not to offer it again for 4 hours. I didn't actually do this as I thought it wrong as unrestricted fresh water is, in my opinion, a right.
Up until February of this year he was pretty much fine; he was castrated because he was a humper and the cats were, unfortunately, the objects of his passion, but luckily this seemed to cure the problem ok and the cats could rest safely again. He was lively and loved nothing more than standing at the gate guarding the house by barking at anyone or anything that dared to walk past, even though he would lick them to death if they stopped to say hello to him!
In February he developed bad breath and started vomiting flem especially after drinking water, so I made an appointment at the vets to have his teeth checked. They had a quick look and booked him in for the next day and I duly took him in early in the morning. Now anyone who knows me knows that I am a worrier when animals have operations.. I worry the whole time they are gone and always think the worst so when at midday I received a phone call from the vets I wasn't surprised. She asked me to go in and have a chat with them. When I got there she told me that they suspected he had kidney disease as his teeth and bones were badly affected. They asked to do several tests all of which confirmed the diagnoses of juvenile kidney disease. They told me that it is very likely to be hereditary especially as he has had the symptoms from a pup. He was put on Hills KD tinned food which thankfully he loved and ate without problems. I was told that there was no medication that could be given. This was all such a terrible shock.. to take in a young dog to have his teeth cleaned only to be told he is dying of old age (which is basically what is happening) was dreadful; I was stunned and just stood there as they pointed out the tiny malformed kidneys on the x-ray, not really taking it in!
Since then we have tried to enjoy life together while we can. We also have 2 other dogs, a Chocolate Lab called Ella and an English Springer called Luna and until recently we have regularly taken Pippin out with us on our daily off lead run although he walked next to me rather than joining in with the other two’s ball games most of the time.
Sadly over the last couple of days all he has wanted to do is sleep; he has almost stopped eating now and his breath is really bad. I know that there is nothing they can do and that when I take him in they will suggest the inevitable. It’s so hard to make that decision but I know I have to for his sake; it’s just so difficult isn’t it!!!! It was hard enough with my 2 previous babies but they were 13 and 18 so at least they had had a good long life, but this is just heart breaking! To cap it all my husband is away on business in London tomorrow so he won’t be able to go with me and my daughter of 23 will have to stay at home and look after my 11 year old dd for me. My best friend is away and there is really no-one else that I am close enough to that I want with me for something like this. I could wait until Tuesday but would that be fair on poor Pippin?
I would love to hear from anyone who has got/had puppies suffering from this terrible condition, and especially anyone who has had an affected Cavalier as I have been told by my vet that it’s not been recognised in them before. Also did any of you tell the breeder about it as I haven’t done so yet and know I should have but what with him being so ill, then I really couldn’t face it. My vet said there isn’t any point as it’s not recognised in the breed but my answer to that is that there could be dozens of vets saying the same thing to CKCS owners all over the country.. world even.. and not one of them would know about the other!
Anyway sorry for going on so much! I send all my love and thoughts to anyone else who is going through something similar to us; I am here for anyone if you want to talk to someone about it as talking/writing does help! Thank you for listening!
Take care and a Happy Christmas to you all!
Carrie ~

Re: Juvenile renal disease, please help

First off I completely feel for what your going through and know it's unbearable. Please go to Yahoo news group under K9kidney and the people there will help you. They have a vast amount of information and require you to post your pups blood and urine results. I wish I had some advance notice on Timbers kidneys failing cause I feel that with the help of all the people at
K9kidney I could have had more time with my 2yr old Timber. Unfortunatley Timber hid her disease well and when I picked up it was too late. I had Timber at the vet for 2 weeks on IV drip and a vast amout of meds were given but I knew I was only prolonging her pain and knew that no amount of love or money (vet bill) was going to make her better. It was by far the hardest decision I have ever made but I know that I left no stone unturned.
Is your pup eating? that is always a good sign of how your dog is feeling.

I sincerely wish you and Pippin all the best with love and prayers

Re: Juvenile renal disease, please help

Rufus lasted just 3 weeks from diagnosis. We were too late for K9kidney to be of any use. Also there is not much you can do if the kidneys have not grown and developed.

Carrie, I am so sorry to hear about Pippin. In answer to your question, I did get in touch with the breeder to ask if there were any other problems in the litter and I was told all the others were fine. I specifically asked about the puppy that she had kept as she was very similar to Rufus and I was told that she was fine.

After Christmas I decided to e-mail the other puppy owners. I got 2 replies back straight away. One had a bitch who had become incontinent and was going off her food - an especially bad sign for a retriever! I spoke with the lady and she told me that the pup the breeder had kept was totally incontinent from the first few weeks - so not fine. She had also been in touch with the breeder and asked about littermates. She was told there were no other problems! This was about 2 weeks after Rufus had been put down and about a month after I had first been in touch! Very economical with the truth!

On monday the other pup was diagnosed with JRD with only a small amount of one kidney working, so her best outlook is 6 months.

On the bright side the breeder has stated that she will not repeat this pairing.

Should we inform the kennel club? or the golden retriever club GB?

Any thoughts?

Re: Juvenile renal disease, please help

Hi,
Thank you for your wishes and information, all very interesting!!
Sadly we lost Pippin on Boxing Day evening; the day after I posted the original message he rallied and seemed much brighter even to the point of asking me to take him out in the car something that he loved but hadn't wanted for a few days previously. I took him with me when I ran an errand and we stopped and had a lovely walk along a dry lane that he could run off lead. He even ran in front of me sniffing for rabbits and had a great time! I sort of knew it would be the last time so we made the most of it. The next couple of days he stayed pretty well and as he was eating a little and drinking ok I made an appointment at the vets for 27th Dec. I think I just wanted him to see another Christmas as he loved seeing the family and being made a fuss of and opening his little treat presents. Christmas Day he wasn't so good but he enjoyed the day and ate a little turkey. Boxing day morning he had really gone down hill and stopped eating and drinking, I gave him sips of water and helped him out to the garden for a wee as he didn't like doing it in the house. I knew from the moment I got up that he was going as he had that smell about him and told everyone about it; all our animals have had that at the end and even my Mum did the day she passed away, everyone in the family thought I was mad saying that but maybe I am just good at picking up on it I don't know. Anyway I spent all day cuddling him (he was a proper lap dog) and caring for him. He wasn't in any pain thank god and he was content to lay on my lap and take the comfort. Then at about 10.30 pm he started having a seizure, just like that no warning, and I told my husband that it was time to take him to the vet. He rang the vet and we took him in; luckily the vet on duty was his vet so she knew all about him. She said nothing else could be done which we already knew and she put him to sleep; he never regained consiousness and she said he wouldn't have known anything about what was happening and hadn't been in any pain during the day. I sobbed for days afterwards and still do but at least we had him for 9 months after diagnosis.

Deanna I am so sorry about Timber, you did what was best for him and he knew how much you loved him!! I send you all my thoughts and hugs; it's so hard isn't it!
I looked into and joined the Yahoo group when Pippin was first diagnosed but didn't think it was for me. Some of the members seem to put their babies through so much and it does make you wonder whether it's for the pup or for themselves; kidney disease can't be cured and personally I feel that if we can make their lives as normal as possible for as long as possible then that is enough. Once you get to the stage of having to IV them 3 times a day (the messages speak for themselves as to how hard this is for the pups) every day just to keep them alive that day then you have to ask yourself who you're doing it for; just my opinion.

jhgold I am so sorry also about poor Rufus, 6 months is so very young and truly heartbreaking! It makes me realise how lucky we were to have Pippin for so long! I can't believe the breeder lied to you all like that, unbelievable isn't it especially as she had one affected also!
You say that she said she won't repeat the pairing.. does that mean she won't be breeding from either of them again or that she won't be breeding them together? She shouldn't breed from either of them again because if she knows they have the recessive gene then she could well have the problem again if she breeds them with another that already has the gene but is still hidden! I think the kennel club would be more receptive now as they have had so much bad press lately because of in-breeding etc. They actually are in a good position as they have all the genetic familial information on record already. If they really wanted to help these pups then it would be relatively easy for them to make databases to help prevent these problems; they do very little considering how much money they rake in! Just a thought!
I still haven't told the breeder of Pippin as it seemed too painful but your message has given me the impetus to do so and I will be writing to her over the next couple of days. I tried e-mailing her a few months after we got Pip with news of his progress and photos but had no reply.. hmm thats odd isn't it when you think about it as she asked us to let her know how he was getting on, makes you wonder why she didn't reply and the mail didn't bounce back either! My email address is nurtureyourchild@hotmail.com if you or anyone would like to mail me as I really think it important to spread the news about this condition.. one of the first signs of it in a pup is the copious amounts of light coloured urine, difficulty to house train and drinking more than usual, Pippin had all of these and I so wish I had known and picked up on it so that he could have been on kd food from the start.
My thoughts are with you and everyone that has a pup with this condition and I send my love and a hug at this sad time!
