Post puzzled by spots

I am new here so hello all.
I have a 3 year old ridgeback and noticed 2 days ago that on either side of his face (where I would say his cheeks are) there are 2 flat dots which are quite hard and the size of a small pea. They are not raised but are slightly wet all the time. They remind me of what a cat might have to spread its scent.
They are not under his jaw area where his glands would be. I have cleaned and put some antiseptic on them and given him some ear drops in case he has an ear infection. For all I know they could be a natural occurance, he seems in good health and is not off his food.
Last week he was in the sand dunes at the beach and kept burying his head in the grasses.
Any suggestions please.

Re: puzzled by spots

Could they not be his side whiskers?
I know Chance on either side has a patch of three whiskers in a triangle like shape and they are similar to what you are describing.
Have a look at this image, you can see the side ones just along from the corner of the lip, my dog Chance, his are much higher up...
