Re: Bakers sensitive - discontinued

Hi
Looking at the ingredients list for Bakers sensitive, if you are looking for something similar you need,
no red meat
wheat gluten free
Soya free
no dairy products
There is however a lot of mysterious ingredients on the list (such as meat and animal deriatives!) Your dog will like this food cos of the high sugar content, it will however get used to a less sugary food.
There should be plenty of choice for you out there which covers this criteria.
Remember witha better quality of food your dog won't have to eat as much! (so it might not be he doesn't like the food he just won't need as much of it)

Re: Bakers sensitive - discontinued

interesting point about the sugar, I haven't noticed that but it may explain why he likes it and put weight on easily with bakers sensitive, but struggle when we try him on the better brands.

he doesn't eat less on the better brand, he picks a mouthful or two, then won't eat any further. the probelm is he finds it hard to retain weight (he is a weim, so you can imagine the level of energy he has) so you can visisbly see him get thinner within a week

one theory we had with bakers is that it has so little real meat in it that even he can tolerate the food, where as with the better brands which use higher quality meat means there is more meat protein and hence his stomach struggles .

we are now researching all the brands suggested in this forum, lookinging into veggie dog food and buying up what we can of the remaining bakers sensitive. wich me luck

Thanks for all the posting so far, the support is much appreciated

Re: Bakers sensitive - discontinued

Have you tried excluding the dry from the diet altogether?
A lot of weimaraner owners feed either raw or a good quality wet like nature diet? Has your vet tested to se exactly what the allergy is?

Re: Bakers sensitive - discontinued

I work in a pet shop and the amount of things that get discontinued is ridiculous (sp). We were so annoyed at work because alot of people do use it. Whenever we get a new product in that people like its sometimes discontinued after a few months. Markies trios have also been discontinued and we sell loads of them because we sell biscuits loose!

Re: Bakers sensitive - discontinued

Is it worth asking the vet to do food allergy tests? Mind you, I am not sure how reliable they are, perhaps somebody else can advise. It is something I had considered for my dog who also had an upset stomach but luckily she settled on a potato based food so we didn't need to go down that road.

I have just stumbled onto veggie-pets.com, they do vegetarian dog stuff and do taster packs Vegetarian Dog Food Taster Packs
Am guessing that might be worthwhile.

Re: Bakers sensitive - discontinued

Just had a look at the Bakers Complete Sensitive ingredients and blurb.

It says: Formulated without red meat and dairy products - to reduce the chance of allergic reactions; Formulated without gluten, wheat and soya - further limiting allergic reactions; Turkey protein - a yummy but palatable source of energy; Fibre - for smooth, comfortable digestion; Omega 3 & 6 oils - helping his coat stay glossy and skin healthy

Ingredients: Cereals (minimum 4% rice in the yellow kernel), Meat and animal derivatives (minimum 4% turkey in the light brown kernel, minimum 4% fresh meat in the soft moist kernel), Vegetable protein extracts, Derivatives of vegetable origin, Oils and fats, Fish and fish derivatives, Various sugars, Minerals, Yeasts, Vegetables (minimum 4% vegetables in the green kernel). Contains EC permitted colourants, antioxidants and preservatives.

So basically, it looks as if you're needing an alternative rice and poultry dry food with no red meat, dairy, gluten, wheat or soya ingredients for your boy.

I found these for you:

Skinners Chicken and Rice Sensitive Dog Food 15Kg - £25.09

Turkey & Rice Adult dog food from Symply

Hope they are of some help.

Re: Bakers sensitive - discontinued

We have the same problem Sunny loves Sensitive but has struggled on any of the other supermarket brand names so we will have to investigate the brands mentioned on here - to make it worse we live in the channel islands so we have limited choice and not many websites deliver to the Islands and postage is expensive!!
