Unhappy Is Our Lurcher Pup Eating Enough?

We have had our pup for 2 weeks now(aged 14 weeks) and are concerned about the amount she is eating. She seemed to be ok at the start but has recently slowed up. She has a heart murmur which I don't think links and diet issues.
It may be down to the recent hot weather as she is black and has had more quiet spells but is still hyper at times.
She doesn't appear to be getting wider around the waist but I am not sure how wide she should be?
Her tummy seems fat enough but you can see her ribs.
She won't eat a lot of her puppy biscuits but when given little bits of chicken, egg or tuna she loves it.
Are we over reacting or not?
We are going to take her back for her last injections a week tomorrow when the Vet will update us on the weight.

Thanks,

Graeme.

Re: Is Our Lurcher Pup Eating Enough?

Hi,congrats on your new pup....ummm dont see any pics? lol!
Some breeds of dogs do remain very slight until they reach 18mths-3yrs,especially active breeds.
This hot weather has unsettled alot of dogs/pups,however,i would also say, they become very clever at realising they will be offered treats if they dont eat their food!! I personally would stop the treats and offer food at mealtimes.if it doesnt get eaten, take it away after about 20mins or so,then offer the next meal at the usual time.If your pup isnt eating all the meals, then maybe drop back from 4 to 3 meals(if they are having 4 meals that is),that way she will become hungrier and eat better.
Im sure if the vet is at all concerned, they will let you know, but try not to worry as long as your pup is happy and healthy.

Re: Is Our Lurcher Pup Eating Enough?

It's worrying isnt it when pups start to go off their grub a bit, or aren't eating the amount we want them too.

I can only go on personal experience because my pup has recently gone off his food. I tried all sort of different brands and flavours but nothing worked until I started to give him raw food and now he is clearing his bowl three times a day.

At the moment I am using NatureDiet and Prize Choice as well as the odd bit of raw meat from the butchers.

All I can recommend as a novice puppy owner is to have her checked over at the vets if you are worried, and if she gets a clean bill of health then maybe think about changing her diet to something she enjoys a bit more than her current puppy food.
