My puppie has diorea with a little blood in & im worried!

I bough coco last thursday, she is 11 weeks old & had been wormed & had her first vaccination. I took her to my vets on fri to register her & they checked her over, said she was healthy & gave her, her second vacination. On sunday she started with diorea & later had a little blood in it, I rang the vets twice & they assured me that it was common with new puppies when they are setteling in a new home. They also advised me to feed her chicken & rice. Yesterday my fiance took her to the vets as there was still a little blood in her poo & still diorea (however it wasnt so runny) they checked her tempreture & said that we should worm her & if it hasnt cleared in a few days to bring her back for some antibiotics Has anyone any other advice, im really worried. In her self she is happy & liveley, its just when she has a poo I get worried. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Fi

Hi - can I ask what food you feed your pup? Try and get hold of some ProKolin paste and put this in her food. This will put the good bacteria back into her tummy and help dry up the runs. I would try the frozen white fish blocks from the supermarket (eg, cod or coley) and mix this with a little rice for the moment. Are you feeding her a good quality puppy food? Try not to worry - I had this when Henry was a pup and as long as she's kept hydrated and is eating little and often, she should be fine. If it doesn't clear up within a couple of days of light diet, she may need the antibiotics as she may have picked up an infection.

Hi there, congrats on your new pup. What breed is it?
This is a tricky one really,as you have been advised by your vet.So maybe itd be best to follow what they say for a few days.
If however,it gets no better, seek your vets advise sooner.

Re: My puppie has diorea with a little blood in & im worried!

she is a Boston Terrier crossed with a French Bulldog (ive just posted a piccy in that forum), herea another one. thanks for the advice, I have always had dogs but never a puppie. She has been drinking lots of water, when I bought her I came away with a bag of food from the breader, it was harringtons Lamb & rice compleate. I have now bought pedigree puppy growth & protection chicken & rice food but shes still on the chicken & rice at the mo, have been feeding her 3 times a day & she is enjoying her food. She is very happy & loves her food, im just worried about the blood. Will try the pro kolin, where will I be able to buy? thanks again Fi

Re: My puppie has diorea with a little blood in & im worried!

Fi,she is gorgeous!!
Umm gosh, without being rude,i really wouldnt use pedigree food (and as you havent already started using it,you still have time to change it!)
There are lots of good foods out there, some dont cost the earth, but most are better than pedigree.have a read through some of the food threads in this section .Its a bit of a minefield and easy to get confused, but just ask away and we will all help you,if we can.
If the vets arent worried about her and she still has a bad tum in a few days,go back to the rice and chicken (if its still not good on rice and chicken, use rice and white fish),then very slowly reintroduce her food.

Re: My puppie has diorea with a little blood in & im worried!

She's lovely - as for the ProKolin, your vet will probably sell this but if you want to order online you can probably get it cheaper for next time. If the blood is bright red, this means it is probably just a little bit of the inflamed gut lining and should clear up shortly. Dark brown blood is more of a concern, but I would imagine in your pup's case it will be a small amount of fresh red blood from her irritated gut lining. The ProKolin will help line the gut and encourage friendly bacteria. If you want to order online, Vet UK is a good site with fast delivery.

Please don't take offence but Pedigree is not known to be one of the better foods. If it were me, I would be happier feeding my pup something like Burns or Arden Grange, but I also really rate Naturediet which is a moist food in a tray from PAH or online. This also comes in Puppy and is a really high quality food, 60% meat with rice and vegetables and no additives, etc. Very gentle on the tummy and dogs love it!

Hope your Pup improves really quickly.

Re: My puppie has diorea with a little blood in & im worried!

My pup had diarrhoea when I first got him, and it did have the odd streak of blood in. Vet check showed all was well and it was just a combination of worming and moving away from Mum. It soon settled down.

As for food, I used to have my pup on Harringtons and thought it was a good make, but have recently found it is not as good as I thought. Pedigree, although a popular brand name is not the best either.

Have a look for something like Burns, Fish 4 Dogs or something similar to ensure your beautiful pup gets the best nutrition.

Re: My puppie has diorea with a little blood in & im worried!

Hi,its great to hear your pups tummy is better
I think in years gone by many people used pedigree food, but these days with more known about dog nutrition there are some great foods out there.
Alot of foods can be bought in large pet stores, and also online.(try and stay away from supermarket foods)
Try and look at foods that have good ingredients but stay away from too many fillers, anything with colour, flavours or additives.
Have a look at some websites such as Fish4dogs,CSJ,Barking Heads etc. Some of the bigger names can be pricey (but you need to use less).
Do some comparisons before you jump in and buy,and always change over slowly,so as not to cause anymore upset tums.
Am sure others will come along and give you other websites to check out.
We are always happy yo help you if we can
