Re: Human Food For Our Dogs! What if any?.....

I give vegetables and rice. Obviously meat. I spent a fair bit of time in the FAr East and peeps there didn't have the benefit of commercial pet food so fed their dogs on basmati rice, free range chicken and veggies. (these were pet dogs btw and not the edible type etc). And the dogs were a picture of health - clean teeth, happy and glossy shiny coat.

My Mum would disagree. She lives in Thailand and the dogs there are mainylo fed rice. A lot are deformed and die as older pups, so it may be the ones you saw were the ones that survived and therefore the 'fittest'.

Dogs ate what they should be eating now years ago, IMO, albeit a less 'luxirious' version. Meat, fish, bones and table scraps. In the wild they woudl eat meat, bones and carcasses, which would include vegetable matter, and whatever they could scavenge.

Giving dogs meat, fish and/or bone plus some veggies is fine. Onions should be avoided, and brocolli and any of the cabbage family shouldn't be fed in large amounts. Herring should also not be fed in excess. Cheese is also OK in smallish amounts.

Anything else, such as plain biscuits etc shouldn't do any harm in small amounts. Can't see it being THAT different to dog biscuits.

You can also stuff Kongs with peanut butter, cream cheese and pate.

All bones should be raw.

Although having travelled to Thailand I was talking more about Indonesia.

And also I am aware of what dogs eat/ ate in the wild so thank you for your lecture!!

Oh and I did live and WORK in the Far East probably amongst some of the poorest people in the world so I do know what I am talking about and what I did see.

Thanks again.

Gosh! You're a bit touchy!

I was only directing the first bit of my post at you, and it was meant to be a question, but I forgot my question mark. However, My mum and hsuband both live and WORK in the far east (Thailand, poor part, bot city) and Vietnam and Singapore and what they see and what I have seen out there is what i said, which is why i was asking the question as to whether the dogs you has seen may have been the ones that survived.

The rest o fmy post was not a lecture, but intended to be a helpful response to the OP, as she asked what human foods dogs could eat and mentioned what had they used to do in the old days when they didnt have all this new fangled info

I am not touchy at all thank you.

I just wish I had half of your knowledge - I could write the next edition of the encyclopedia (only joking) lol no seriously you really do seem to have a wealth of information on all nature of things. Do you read a lot or is it from personal experience?

Apologies then.

Encylopedia...... ROFL.

I do read an awful lot, and I also DO a lot, dogs permitting. My dogs are my entire life (as will my cat be when she arrives tomorrow ) and as their owner I feel it is up to me to be able to make informed choices about what is best for them, so I research things (both practically and theoretically) in order that I may do so.

Other than dogs, a few other furries and some uselsss information, my knowledge is fairly limited, I am just a know-it-all, that's all.

Thumbs up Re: Human Food For Our Dogs! What if any?.....

Hi Ladywiccana!

I feed my Harley a raw diet, which has drastically cut my visits to the vet, his teeth and coat are great, he poops less, his stools are firm, he is able to express his glands, and he doesn't smell doggy, all a major plus I'd say.

Basically I feed:

Raw meaty bones; chicken, lamb, turkey - 70%
Raw pulped veggies - 20%
Raw pulped fruit - 10%

I also add raw eggs including the shell a couple times a week, and powdered herbs and Salmon oil, which I get from here

I have also read that feeding raw lessens the likelihood of bloat in deep chested dogs.
