Bloat - what do i need to know

Hi Everyone, I am looking for some advice. I have just brought home a Dogue De Bordeaux puppy, she is stunning and is 3 months old. I know the breed is prone to bloat and have done some reading around this however I wanted to ask advice on what i need to know and do to prevent this and give her the healthiest start in life.

The things we are doing so far are:
  • Giving her small amounts of food 4 times a day
Lifting the bowl once she has eaten so she cant graze
Watching to make sure she is eating slowly (feeding her seperate from our current dog so there is no 'race')
  • we will have raised bowls for her as she gets older

I have also noticed that she is a little snuffly - almost like she is a bit snotty - is this normal?

Any advice appreciated!
Thank you

Re: Bloat - what do i need to know

Funnily enough I have just posted about bloat on another thread. I have loads of info on it. Keeping weims and having suffered if with one of my dogs, and also knowing several weims that have died from it is is something that I feel all dog owners should know the signs of.
Will look up all info and can later and post, mine are baying for exercise at the moment
regards
Sue

Thats great, thank you - i have printed both as reference for the future.

I knew about the feeding however one thing i am a bit confused about is one of the articles says a cause is elevated food bowls however i have been told this is a step you should take to prevent it? which is more accurate

I must admit that did confuse me too, and I have always fed mine with elevated food bowls because I was always told it helps. However I have just done a quick google search on the subject and all are saying not to use elevated bowls

Re: Bloat - what do i need to know

Not conclusive, vets do vary on their opinions here, I used to use a BRAKE bowl, don't think they have a distributer in the UK, (was considering it but I had to take 5,000 - at what I considered an extoitinate price) they are however easily shipped from the USA cost around $20 each I used to buy two at a time and with shipping it costs the same to ship one as it does too, again if you want a link, I'll look for one.

Some people put a heavy coiled chain on top of the food, I never dared do this as I was afraid of damaging the teeth.
