Having a dog Spayed

Now then,

I'm wondering if I would benefit from being spayed?

I'll never be making babies (intentionally anyway!) and so what are the pros and cons of doing it?

Re: Having a dog Spayed

also, what age do you recommend it is done. Is it something that should be done whilst I'm young or wait until I reach adulthood?

Re: Having a dog Spayed

see's it quite a contreversial subject, I personally will be getting both my bitches done when they are 18 months old so I know 100% they are finished growing plus they have had about 3 seasons so everything is all fully sorted

Re: Having a dog Spayed

Most male dogs are done after 9 months of age better if about 12 - 15 months as this time makes sure all your growing is over with and you reach maturity emotionally too .
Ther are pros and cons to it but safe to say you,l make the right choice for you and your owners , If this descision is due to behavioral issues then dont do it, as it doesnt always make any difference to behavior problems , it can however help against testicular cancer , there are plenty of places your owners can research and make a descision as to go ahead or not , the op itself isnt too bad and you should be fully recovered in about a week or so , cost varies as to where your vets are and their pricing structure .

do you know tat if you spay your female before her first heat; her risk of getting breast cancer later in life is less than 98%? i duno about, but i'd always get my bitches spayed before 8months. 6month is my preferred time.

as for male dogs - should castrate them at 6month = to reduce all the behavioral prob from croachin in. =)

Re: Having a dog Spayed

Dogs should not be castrated until at least 18 months - castration is not a cure for behavioural problems, it can sometimes make the problems worse. Large breed dogs especially should be given time to physically mature before being done

As for bitches it is usually thought that they should have one season and then be spayed

Re: Having a dog Spayed

I would not neuter a dog or bitch too early. They must be mature enough.

Yes neutering before a season will help prevent mamary cancer by about 95%,but it can also lead to immature bone growth.

Link here :

I always advise pup owners to consider neutering their bitch,if they dont intend to breed, because if she was ever stolen i would worry that she would be used as a puppy machine.

Whenever i am out walking i always tell people mine are neutered, which my girls are anyway bit harder to convince them the boys are done though when they've got two danglys

Re: Having a dog Spayed

Females after their first season or before they are 2 yrs old giving this will lesson the chance to have mammary cancer
Dogs by 18mths due to the fact of growth and maturaty .
Getting any dog / bitch done will not help towards behaviour what ever anyone will say they can get worse and have known to get worse after they have been done . .Its just people excuses if there dog has behavior problems , my dogs not done , so this is why they act that way .

So if you want to have your knackers removed ask your owners to wait until your at least 18mths and your just have to try and control yourself in the mean time , which know will be hard as your a male

Re: Having a dog Spayed

My bitch had mammary cancer, she was used as a breeder before I had her and when I took her to be spayed I pointed out her lumpy teats. Luckily the vet removed them and it hadnt spread to her lungs, but he said the same as the previous posts, the chances are greatly reduced through spaying.

You're a girlie aren't you chance?

Our girl is 13 weeks old and the common advice we have been given is to allow for at least 1 season and leave it till they have finished growing, which is about 12 months for my breed. We will defo have her spayed as we have no intentions of breeding or showing her at all.

I would never resort to neutering/spaying for behaviour issues as this isn't guaranteed. Both my dogs go to training classes every week which is the best bet for behaviour (not that mine have issues, just have started from puppies )
