Re: barf diet

I would say look into it thoroughly prior to starting. I worry that because it is the latest 'fad' people go into it too quickly and their dogs are not getting a balanced diet. That said, as long as you are prepared to offer as much variety as possible, meat and fish wise, and include some blended veggies/fruit, herbs, nuts, seeds and oils, you won't go far wrong. Obviously you need to get the meat/bone ratio right aswell. You need to aim for firm stools, but too much bone will cause constipation.

Look at Raw Meaty Bones and Tom Lonsdale (author of the site) has written several books that are worth reading too. Ian Billingshurst has also written some good books, and has a different view to Tom Lonsdale, so you can have a look at a few different methods of raw.BARF feeding and decide which route you want to go down. I personally an halfway between TL's and IB's methods, in that I would not feed minced or ground bone, preferring whole meaty bones and recreational bone, but I do feed some fruit/veg etc. I do not supplement (other than oils) as I believe that supplements are not needed if a balanced diet is provided.
