why use dog shampoo??

What is the rationale behind using special shampoo for dogs??
I know their must be a reason but Im curious...mainly coz I keep forgetting to buy dog shampoo!
The last 2 times they have poop rolled I had the choice of value range hand soap or Timotei shampoo! Thing is their coats came up lovely, smelled nice, they scratched less after shampooing and also didnt seem to feel the need to go straight out and roll in poop again (which they tend to do with dog shampoo!!).
Have I done them any harm??, even though they look and feel better?

Re: why use dog shampoo??

I am a groomer therefore I would obviously use dog shampoo lol. Sometimes the chemical in baby shampoo can be too harsh for the dogs coat, I believe. I'm not entirely sure. I've never used baby shampoo but while looking into what was wrong with Bailey's skin a few months back we discovered that two of his litter mates took an extreme reaction to a certain chemical - the name I can't remember at the moment- and one pup nearly died.

So my guess is that it has the potential to cause a severe reaction but at the same time I know a few people who use baby shampoo..
Also dog shampoo is designed to help their coats and their natural oils etc. I think aswell the PH balance can differ which them can cause dry, flaky skin.

Re: why use dog shampoo??

Hiya, MissBexi is right, it's lanolin in normal shampoo that's best avoided. It can make the dogs coat tacky and that will attract more dirt and can tangle the hair up pretty bad. I have a friend that shampood her Papillon with Baby Shampoo and it was a disaster! There are some really great dog shampoos and conditioners on the market, especially formulated for different coats (be it short hair/long hair/wiry/enhancement for black coats/white coats) and not badly priced. If you need any help in selecting something suitable for your dog, give me a shout

Re: why use dog shampoo??

Using any form of humn shampoo is potentially very damaging to your dog. Humans have a different ph level to dogs, therefore of you use human shampoo on a dog it can strip the natural oils that protect its skin, opening it up for all minds of things such as bacteria which can lead to itchy / dry skin, general skin problems and various other things.

It's always best to use a dog shampoo and not any Human or baby shampoo. No matter what people tell you. If a particular dog shampoo isnt working very well, try another. Don't always go for the cheaper options.

You also might think that dog shampoo is expensive, but if you take into consideration how often you bath your dog, the amount you use and whether it can be watered down or not, 1 bottle should last you a while.

There are many different types of dog shampoo, specifically designed formulas to help combat itchy / dry skin, shampoo that regenerates the dogs coat and various others. There are even medicated dog shampoos out there.

Have a look at : Dog Shampoos, Dog Bowls and much more - Be Groom and read through some of the shampoos to see the benefits of them.
