Surely this can't be right?

I have a truly beautiful 8 month old Chinese Crested Powder Puff dog.
I knew having a long haired, double coated dog would require allot of grooming... daily but can somebody give me a little advice on something?

I give him a good groom everyday, a thourough brushing etc...
The thing is, he matts... dreadfully. I mean, I could groom him and half hour later he'd be in really bad knots and sometimes even matts.
He always grooms himself and does a good job of creating his own little matts but even when he doesn't there will be matts within an hour or two of his grooming session. Surely this isn't right?

For brushing I use a slicker for sensitive skin and a metal ball point brush and sometimes a bristle brush for shine.

I've been thinking of having him put into a teddy bear cut to help me maintain a matt free coat. I've even considered a pony cut but I'm afraid that'd truly ruin his coat for good.

Any tips/tricks/info?

Thankies!

Only got experience with double coated Northern breeds, but might be worth leaving a message for Devil Dogs in case she doesnt pick up the thread. What she wouldnt know about grooming CCs is likely to be irrelevant anyway. There is another CC owner too, and I just cant think of the user name brain dead tonight!!

Re: Surely this can't be right?

After all the brushing are you combing through the hair as well? I would use a metal comb as this will often show up little knots/matts that the brush has missed and little knots soon grow into bigger matts.

It could just be that your dog is going through a coat change from the soft puppy fluff to his adult coat. If this is the case it just means alot of brushing for now but the good news is it won't be forever and adult coat is generally a bit easier to maintain.

If you do decide to get him clipped shorter it shouldn't affect his coat. If it is coat change it will be easier to maintain, then in a couple of months you can start to let it grow out again and hopefully it won't matt so easily.

Re: Surely this can't be right?

go onto petcetera etc website and look through the grooming products like shampoos and conditioners there are some products that help prevent matting and others that help to get them out.

also some dogs change coats at a certain age and are suddenly hideos to keep groomes . im not familiar enough with your breed to know if and what age it happens at , if i rember right devil-dogz keeps cresteds she would possibly know.

Re: Surely this can't be right?

I sympathise with you. My Beddies mat like there is no tomorrow. Bailey's coat is great as it normal comes out really easy, Suki's got a nightmare of a coat. It's awful.

I use a slicker brush, which you already own, I also use:

Comb: Wahl Smartgroom Pet Grooming Comb 6 inch / 15cm Stainless Steel: Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies

Anti-Tangle Comb: Mikki Anti-Tangle Comb - For Fine Coats > Knots & Tangles > Dog Grooming > Dogs > Main Section > UKPetSupplies

Mikkie Matt Breaker: Matt Breaker Grooming Tool with Replacement Blades by Mikki | Pets at Home (These may look evil but they are fantastic for getting matts out..

I think that's all I use... That and occasionally clipping the dog off
