Exclamation Is This Wrong??

Hi, I'm an avid reader of the forum but havn't posted much, just didn't know where else to ask, I'm sure someone on here can help

I have just taken my puppy to a local groomer to get his claws cut as he hates it and I thought they would have a better chance than me, as he's always good at the vets etc.

Well, I was wrong!

The groomer just got me to hold him outside the door to her room and she lent over the baby gate with the clippers, I said I thought she would have put him on the table but she said it would be too stressful. She then warned me that once the nails have been clipped they would be sharp and to be careful if he jumps up, then went on to tell me that I should fill a plastic bottle with gravel and give it a good shake at him if he does jump up and that will stop him That horrified me as the last thing I'd ever want to do is scare my dog, but I thought just let her get the claws done and I'd get out of there.

He was very wriggly and wasn't liking it but she did the back claws, I then had to put him down to get a better hold as I was scared I'd drop him! Then she started on the front and he got even more fidgety and I did get a little nip, She had hold of his front paw and she pulled his leg hard twice and shouted "no, no" of course he then whined and went a little crazy in my arms so she hit him on the top of his head hard and was just about to do it again but I moved away and she missed thank god!

I was shaking, told her what I thought of her and walked off. I found the manager of the pet shop but he really couldn't have cared less, he said she'd been there years and he'd have a word with her.

I left in a hurry and cried all the way home! I feel so guilty for putting my puppy through that.

Rant over, sorry

If you have managed to get through this whole post, what I really want to know is are groomers regulated or registered? and who can I report her to? if anyone?

After being upset I am now furious and am concerned for all the dogs she grooms there without their owners present.

Thanks in advance for reading my post x

Re: Is This Wrong??

I'd have punched her for doing that to my dog.

No idea if they are regulated, probably not though.

You may find you'll have issues now in the future, so id work on desensitising your dog to having his feet touched.

I would not tolerate that at all and I don't think you're wrong to be upset. I'm surprised she hasn't been bitten if she goes around doing that to strange dogs!

Re: Is This Wrong??

That's disgusting. she had no right to hit your dog.

Obviously don’t go back there and work on desensitising your puppy to having his feet touched. Start by touching his feet and having a treat to hand and build it up from there.

HTH

Re: Is This Wrong??

Err - yes!! Thats is wrong!!

I'd have liked to have seen the stoopid woman try that with my Maddie - she'd have taken her hands off, lol lol!!

Seriously - poster above is right, your poor dog may now have issues with you or others touching paws and claws and it may well be a problem in the future when claws need clipping. I personally use a Dremel - al ot wuicker and a lot less hassle than clippers I find.

Re: Is This Wrong??

Thanks for your replies, I have since found out that they are not regulated but feel a bit better after leaving a bad review online and reporting her to the RSPCA!

I will put in extra effort to desensitise him to haveing his paws touched as he still needs some of his claws cut. Hope he's not too traumatised!

I wish I'd had the guts to punch her though but I'm too soft

Yeah, its like a little mini-one, lol! you can put lots of diff ends on it and we use what I call the toilet roll middle sander one to do our doglets nails with fortnightly. We start with them as baby pups so they get used to it. Maddie madmad is the only who kicks up a bloody great fuss about it and I have to do one or two nails a time with OH holding her coz she would have me hands orf

Well worth buying one, and we found, even if you go too far down to the nerve, the motion and heat of the dremel cauterises it straight away so no bleeding, but TBH, I find it safer, I cant bear the thought of using clippers now - seen too many dogs end up bleeding for ages afterwards!

Great advice, thanks.

I'm sure hubby has something like that in the shed, so maybe I'll give it a go once I am able to touch his paws again!

Thanks x
