It is a further example of the new generation of British manufacturers (with other companies like Barking Heads and of course Natural Dog Food) that use much more meat, understand the benefits of fresh meats and are much less dependent on grains compared to earlier natural brands.

The main virtue of Fish4dogs is its very high proportion of fish, both fresh and dry but this can be a double edged sword. Customers are now demanding ever higher meat contents but by pushing up the amount of meat you use the protein level inevitably rises. Many would say that, as long as it's good quality meat protein, that should not be a problem but from my experience too much protein can contribute to a wide range of upsets. The 26% protein found in Fish4dogs adult is not as high as some brands but it is slightly higher than I would regard as necessary for an average, well exercised, adult dog.

It’s also not cheap - At £40.50 for 12kg, 15kg would be over £50.

And of course (sorry to be a bore!) they use artificial vitamins and minerals.

Apart from that Fish4dogs looks like a very good food and I’m sure most dogs would do very well on it.
Thanks for directing me to this. F4D actually do 15kg bags now for £41, so around the same price as your own food.

The sticking point with me and F4D is the synthetic vitamins, and the sticking point with your food is rice, I was hoping to get them on a grain free diet.

LOL, So I'm still stuck between the two. I love the idea of the kibble having zero artificial ingredients though.

Re: Natural Dog Food Company - Spring Special Offer!

Hello!
my name is Julie & I am contacting you from Athens
I have a 9 months old English cocker puppy...
She was in Royal Canin medium puppy since couple of weeks ago....since then, I tried NDFC (chicken puppy) & she really loves it...
The poos are also great, but I think she is a bit hungry...She is about 10kgs & I give her 200grams / day...well, to be honest with a cocker's hunger you can never know though

I read somewhere in the thread that we can also mix this food with raw meals. I am thinking to give her some raw with kibbles in the weekends.
I was thinking:
One meal of Half kibble quantity + half sardines tin & a raw egg
Another meal of half kibble + 1 chicken wing
Hole kibble quantity and a spoon of yogourt

I would also like to cook some brown rice & add some vegetables in it...but in what proportion with kibble?

Can you please advise?

thanks

Julie

Hi Julie,
Thank you very much for getting in touch.

For an active puppy of 10kg, 200g per day would sound about right but because all dogs are different with different nutritional requirements it is always best to ‘feed by eye’.
From what you have said above, it sounds like you’ve got the feeding amount just about spot on.

Although Natural Dog Food is a complete, natural diet in itself and contains everything a dog needs, adding wholesome, home-prepared foods to the diet is a great way of promoting a healthy, robust digestive system and fending off fussiness. It also better represents the natural diet of the dog which would have changed day by day and season to season.

The only potential problem of adding foods is unbalancing the diet. For example, if you were to add only high protein foods to the diet, the resulting protein rich diet may cause problems. To help maintain the balance we suggest providing a range of foods – fish & meat (cooked or raw), cooked vegetables, cooked whole grains (not wheat or maize), etc. These can be given all in the same meal or one on one day, one the next and so on.
As a general rule, the proportion of additions should be in the region of:

One half meat : One quarter vegetables : One quarter whole grains

Eggs are fine and would fall into the ‘meat’ bracket.

We also recommend keeping the proportion of additions to around 10-15% of the total diet – this can be higher provided the owner has sufficient nutritional knowhow to ensure a healthy balanced diet. Obviously, all additions to the diet (including treats) should be offset by a reduction in the amount of kibble being fed.

Processed foods, as well as salty, spicy or sugary foods should not be given. Dairy products (including yogurt) can cause intolerances in some dogs and are often best avoided.

I hope this helps but if there is anything else I can help with, please be sure to let me know.

David
